Just wondered if anyone else was doing the Great North Run this year. I haven't ran since school and have only just got a place with 10 weeks to go, went out & ran 3 miles today & thought I was going to die

Anyway, as well as seeing if anyone else is doing it, this is also a shameless plug to see if any of you would like to bung me a few quid in sponsorship ;) I am running in aid of The Daisy Chain Project who are a charity based just round the corner from me & specialise in the care of Autistic children as well as providing support for their families. They have a 5.5 acre farm where they do all of this, it's an amazing place (if you live in the North East you may have heard them mentioned on tfm quite a bit).

The charity's website is www.daisychainproject.co.uk if you want more info, and if you would like to sponsor me, the link to do that is www.justgiving.com/BrianQueen

Cheers for reading :)

When is it? I might actually do it...

It's 20th Sept. All the places are gone unless you can find a charity with spaces left and I think final registration for that was Friday gone. There's always 2010 ;)

Doing the run to the beat half the weekend after but would like to do this one next year if ICAS and CTA exams don't get in the way. How much competition is there for places? I'm guessing they fill up pretty quickly.

Yeah, they seem to get snapped up pretty quickly, not sure if it's like a ballot or something for it.

This will be my third time running too, done 2x 3 mile jogs so far, first was painful, second was fairly effortless but slow. I plan on building up 3 miles at a time. So perhaps 3 more runs at 3 miles each and then go onto 6, 9, 12 etc.

what days do you go out running?

I'm doing my 7th Great North Run this year. Last year was my best and I finished in 1hr 58 minutes. This inspired me to join a running club and I have since completed the Redcar Half Marathon in 1hr 39 minutes.

However I have missed a couple of months training due to holidays and then a bout of flu so am just getting back into it. Did the Sunderland 10k race today in 55 minutes which is 10 minutes slower than I did a 10k race 3 months ago. :(

Am going to have to put a lot of effort in over the next 10 weeks to have any chance of beating 1hr 39.

The Great North Run is a great day, there are thousands of people cheering you on over the whole course. Best bit is getting to the pub at the end for a few well earned pints. :D

I run all year round so should be ok for race. I do 3 short runs a week then I do a longer run every weekend about 10 1/2 miles. I Will now be adding 1 mile every week on longer runs :) good luck with your prep

Whenever I find the time to be honest, always around regents park outer circle. Although I need to find some hilly routes to practice on so will explore the rest of central london to see where is good!

I have no problems finding hilly routes around Appleby, Cumbria . Sometimes I wish I ran more on the flat ;) but hay it helps keeps the pounds off.

Flat is ok, but the North/South Shields route has some inclines/declines which I always struggle adapting to.

Not sure how fit you are, but 3 mile leaps is quite a lot to add on to your runs each time, especially if you're quite new to running and your body is still adjusting. You're more prone to injury if you increase the intensity of your runs by that amount. Suggested amount is to increase your longest run by around 1 mile per week.

Not trying to tell you how to do things, it's just a suggestion :)

I didn't manage to enter the GNR in time (didn't cross my mind that I'd actually enjoy this running lark) and don't want a charity place given that I've just eek'd £1200 out of my friends and family for my 10k, so I'm doing the Leicester Half Marathon in October. Gives me plenty of time to build myself up with a few other races along the way :)

The 3 mile increment is roughly just over a lap of the outer circle and i'll be aiming to do 4 or 5 of each set of laps before adding another lap, and then i'll do that 4 or 5 times etc. I'm not new to running, i've done the half marathon twice before so i've done the distances and my body adjusts quite well once i've got into a routine, it's when i've had LONG breaks when it becomes difficult for me.
