Melanoma

OP I'm a few steps ahead. Went in for a check up last Monday. Found a darker than the rest mole. Was told it could be a dysplastic naevus, or malignant melanoma. Doc said it was "borderline". So on Weds I had the wee bugger cut out and I've got three nice stitches in the back of my neck.

Ironically, I'm due to fly out to Oz for a year from Monday. The doc is gonna write to me and tell me either way.

I have every confidence it will be clear. Just makes my year of mountain biking and working in Western Oz a mission to slap it on and cover up big time.

Get yourself checked and all the best.

I can't tell if i've got any on my back, that's what worries me, the thought of having one there and not knowing :/

but good luck to ya mate, and fingers are crossed for good news :)

You're doing the right thing Scuzi by going to the doc's. Hope it turns out OK for you, but make sure you get it checked properly. If you're not happy with the outcome get yourself a 2nd opinion. They won't be offended.

I have a 1cm by 1cm mole on my back, had it checked out by the doctor a year or two ago. He said I could either keep an eye on it, or have it removed (which would result in a permanent 'gap' or small hole in my back. He said it was probably nothing to worry about, so I just trundled off.

He just reminded me to check it often, and seek medical advice if it changes colour or changes in any way or form. 1 year on, and its fine :)

i had one on my stomach that annoyed me (stuck out a little), i went to the doc's and they referred me to hospital to have it cut off... wasnt even malignant!

took some time to build up the courage to do it, but after you're done you'll be glad you did...

trust me!

I can't really help, but I hope it goes well for you..

I accidentally picked a mole off once then just stuck it back on :p

Nothing happened so I think I'm OK

lol, i picked one off my arm once quite absent mindedly, it grew back though (hasn't grown any more, just filled the space where the old one was...)

I went on holiday to the US in 2004 and got sever sin burn on my shoulder. Aftet much blistering and returning home, several months later I realised I had a mole on my shoulder where I had been burnt.

I promptly went to the doctors to get it looked at (at this point I was ******* myself), spent 10 minutes with the doctor explaining what had happened and he then made an arrangement for me to come back in 2 weeks and have the mole removed.

I went back they froze my shoulder and removed the mole. I went back a few weeks later for the results and was told the results were inconclusive as to what it was, but it wasn't skin cancer.

EDIT: I should've looked at the thread date. :p

:)

Holy thread revival!

It all turned out okay in the end. I went to the docs and had it all sorted within a few days. I have Bupa cover with work which quite frankly was awesome, I'd recommend it to anyone who is considering it. It turned out to be a harmless mole which was removed.

Although it all turned out okay this time, from the research I did and from what the docs told me, I got a real eye opener. I'll be checking myself regularly from now on.

ALLI, all the best and fingers crossed your case turns out to be harmless. Let us know how you get on :)

You're right about reading up on medical issues. I have scared the crap out of myself with bloody Wikipedia and WebMD :p

I so agree with this! I was convinced I had :

CJD
cancer
diabities
liver disease
minor strokes

etc..

those stupid websites are responsible for many a sleepless night!! :D

I once had most of the symptoms of leukaemia, going from what websites said... Needless to say, i never had anything near it. Your E-Diagnosis is probably way off. There's a reason why doctors spend 5 years at university. ;)

EDIT: Oh, i didn't realise this was a revival.

Yep. I used to get paranoia about health. was convinced I had every disease known to man after readin around on the net. My doctor told me the internet is the worst possible thing you can read when you think there's something wrong, mainly because it usually says you are almost certainly going to die. Most things that you think maybe serious quite often aren't serious in any way.

My dad had a Malignant Melanoma years ago, appeared just the same as you describe - a mole he didn't notice being there before on his calf. Luckily he noticed it early on and went to the GP who referred him onto a specialist at a hospital. It hadn't spread and the process was all very quick I seem to remember (was young at the time) and they managed to remove it with no problems or the cancer recurring. He had to keep going back quite often at first, then once a year, etc, to keep making sure it hadn't come back.

Not trying to scare you, your mole could be nothing but get it checked out to be on the safe side.

Yep you can scare the hell out of yourself by self diagnosing with google. As for the melanoma, there's every possibility that it will be totally fine bro :), even if it did prove to be malignant it will be lopped off and with a bit of luck you'll have caught it nice and early. I know 4 people who have had moles removed, one of those was malignant and was caught fairly early, no problems to date. Get it checked out dude.

Holy thread revival..

My grandad has had it several times and it runs in the family. All moles should have an eye kept on them and get them removed if they change. Removal is painless and fast, done at the GP. They'll then send it for testing.
