Absolutely FUMING (Arrogant GPs)

The notion that all indian doctors do not care is absurd.

The NHS would collapse in an instant if you were to act on this ludicrous assumption and remove all indian doctors.

To the OP, Im sorry for the trouble your father has gone through due to that doctor, but what you need to do is to go tell that doctor what has happened and tell him he got it wrong. He wont learn unless there is feedback. If you sue him or complain to his superiors the only thing you will achieve is to belittle his possibly already poor motivation and frustrate him further, thus causing more families and people to be misdiagnosed by him. He is human and one can make mistakes but its repeated mistakes of the same kind that should not be tolerated in healthcare delivery. He will learn through feedback rather than through punishment.

Yeah, i fail to understand the logic of some people here, if you suspect racist behaviour (e.g. indian doctors giving preferential treatment to other indians), and simply post what you have observed, that apparently makes you a racist yourself?

Nobody here is claiming ALL indian gp's are racist. Not in the slightest. Calling people racist for just describing what they have personally experienced is pretty pathetic IMO.

Furthermore, the fact that many different people have spoken up about it is almost proof in itself that it happens in more than one place.

Anyways, back on topic, my dad has a CT scan booked for tomorrow and then treatment will start basd on the results, using steroids or something else. My mother (who is a qualified full time ward nurse) has spoken to the head of the GP's surgery to make a complaint, pointing out all the atrocious mistakes made, one by one. Suffice to say we're never using them again

Shocked at some of the garbage posted in this thread. I work with GPs and frankly think half of this is made up drivel for the OCUK forum. No doubt some of it has an element of truth but I bet it's bloody minimal.

All that I'll say is that there's a reliant now on PCs that there wasn't before and I don't think it's particularly benefiting the patient.

Wow. The world health organisation should really offer you a job as you clearly know a great deal more about this than they do.

I possess the ability to count. I'm sure people at WHO do as well. You can find the relevant information online from WHO, CDC, that sort of thing.

My last GP didn't even know what half the anti depressants I mentioned were, and came out with blatently incorrect information about them, I can't say I have much faith in GP's.

Worst GP I had was in scotland, no matter what symptoms you had the medication was always the same: antibiotics.

I don't think he realised you become immune to them the more you have them.

I would hope that you would be immune to any antibiotic that they decide to give you because if you weren't the results would be pretty grim...

My GP is great, never had any problems with him at all. The recent Indian paediatrician we had to see with regards to our daughter was good too. Nice bloke, good english and very caring.

In the 30 or so years I've been living in my town I've had 2 GP's. The 1st one was an arrogant depressing so&so, the 2nd one I've never seen. Every time I've been to the doctors surgery I've seen a different GP but never the one I'm supposed to see. One GP there is so arrogant I've felt like telling him one of these days his attitude is going to lead to him being struck off.

hehe get yourself a good welsh doctor :D

more than willing to listen to to problems with medication and willing to change dosage/prescription :)

Both the GP and the treatments team have welsh doctors and both are great :D

I have to say having read through this thread it's quite depressing reading. I would like to believe that a lot written is half truths and misunderstanding in the main, although I am willing to believe there may be several genuine grievances.

Being a GP myself I do find it quite upsetting that several people think that all GP's want you out the door ASAP and don't give a toss about you. I can tell you I work bloody hard all day long seeing patients, and if on occasions I make a mistake then it hits me pretty bloody hard. I genuinely find it quite offensive that some of you think all doctors couldn't care, why the hell do you think they went into the career? I can tell you now there are an awful lot of other things I could have done with my life that would involve a lot less hassle and worry. How many of you go home and may worry as to whether a decision you made during the day will affect someones life so severely.

It can be quite easy to make judgements with hindsite and the retrospectoscope is a very powerful tool, but sometimes how someone presents and what they tell you or indeed what you can find on examination can change. I can tell you now that patients lie to me and claim to have said things when they didn't. They will minimise some things and maximise others. People come in with an agenda of their own and we have to cope with that, try and get through to the truth and make the best judgement on what we put together. It isn't always quite as clear as you may think, and frequently the only way something truly becomes obvious as to a cause is by using time as a diagnostic tool. I've worked in a lot of different parts of medicine and I actually find GP the most challenging of them.

A lot of the overt racist comments I find really quite disgusting too, but it's quite what I expect these days on the forums. I have a lot of asian colleagues and I know some of the abuse and the like they have suffered whilst working and have just dug deep, put on a smile and dealt with the biggoted patient like the would any other. I thankfully have never had any of this as a white doctor and maybe I would be one of the GP's you'd be considering is alright, I would hope to be at least. Sometimes however reading things like this just make me despair and wonder why we bother.

My dad struggle for about a year with an infected verruca that wouldn't go away. The doctor eventually sent him to a chiropodist. It got very badly infected so he went back to the doctor. Turns out he had leukemia.

Stuff like this happens all the time. GP are useless and generally have very little patients or time to listen to people. I have many other horror stories about his time in hospital since.

The problem with average wages like that is it's heavily skewed by GP partners ie they work as GP and also own and run the business, many people don't understand that. If you are a salaried GP ie only work as a GP you will be on significantly less than that. Not that that really is why anyone became GP's in the first place anyway. Heck when I started medical school doctors would have been on an awful lot less, but it really didn't factor in my decision. I don't think we as a profession have any reason to be embarrassed about what we earn anyway for the level of work and responsability.

BBC

And that was in 2006 can you see GP's wages going down since then? and this is a pretty big motivator for joining any profession from what i can see

As has been pointed out by heeeed, those figures are horribly skewed by both practice partners and those who have a joint practice and pharmacy business. The average salary of a normal family GP is nowhere near £106,000.

And since when did we use average salaries to judge professions? Remember, the average salary in IT is £40,000

My GF is a GP and she loves her job but hates the NHS system of works. Too much time spent on paperwork and too little time allowed for caring the patients. Basically it's also a failure of the system that doesn't help to improve on the quality of GP service. Yes she's a good GP who cares for her patients and doesn't like how the heath care system works here. HOw much time they can see a patient is determined by the secretary who always booked as many patients as possible in an hour, thus end up giving only 5-10mins for each patient.

Yes they do earn a lot but my GF said in Canada or Australia, GP earns even more. Yes they earn over 100k on average but GP partners are the real big earner... but .. footballer earns even more... In all honestly, good GPs have to work quite hard and they have to see all sort of sick people so higher probability to catch all sorts of disease / virus (like swine flu).

Some really ridiculous sweeping generalisations in this thread.

GPs have 7 minutes in most practices so see you, treat you or refer you and get the next patient in.

You try making an accurate diagnosis in 7 minutes. Let alone dealing with all the wonderful people that rock up every day wanting their wondercure/opiates/referral/CT scan for a cough/sleeping pills/viagra/cup of tea/monthly chat.
