Hi all i hope someone can help.

I have a really old AM2 ASRock ALiveSATA2-GLAN motherboard and trying to find a suitable graphics card for it.

Now i know the chipset it uses (VIA K8T890) does not work with gen2 graphics cards e.g. 8800gt +

Based on that can anyone tell me if a 8600gt or 8600gts will work in it?

Thanks a lot

The older 8xxx series cards are Pci-e 1.0.

Like 8800 GTS 320MB & 640MB
8800 GTX.

Not sure about the cheaper cards as I wasn't interested in them, I think the 8600 GTS is Pci-e 1.0, but not 100% certain.

Hi, I used to have that mobo. It didn't work with the new 8800's but worked with the 8800gts 320mb (did have a few issues tho but it seemed to be only my board). Then upgraded to a 3850 512mb (which is pci-e 2) and that ran fine. Also ran an x1950 pro fine. Never tried the 8600 cards tho so i couldn't tell you if they would work. I think it's just nvidia gen 2 cards it has problems with.

hmmm.... sounds interesting might have to see if i can pick up a cheap 3850 and see what happens :)

Thanks for the advice :)

I've got an asus board based on this chipset in my HTCP. It won't run pci-e 2.0 Nvidias without a big performance hit (about 40% appartantly) but pci-e 2.0 ATI's (I used a 3850 256mb) work fine.
