Will You Buy Windows 7???

It seems as though it will just be a preactivated XP VM image, so keys won't be provided per se, but that shouldn't be an issue.

All it does is let you run programs meant for XP in a virtual version of XP.
Also you HAVE to be able to enable VM or whatever it's call it these days in the bios.
If you cannot do that then you cannot use the "xp mode"

"XP Mode consists of the Virtual PC-based virtual environment and a fully licensed copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3). It will be made available, for free, to users of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions via a download from the Microsoft web site. (That is, it will not be included in the box with Windows 7"

Yes, your CPU must be hyper-V compliant to use this feature. It's like Parallels or VMware fusion for the mac, runs in a VM without you actually seeing the VM

I have no use for it because nearly all the software I use right now in XP PRO runs ok in Vista mode in Windows 7.
Vista drivers so far work ok in Windows 7.
I will either get another hard drive, install Windows 7 on that, leave XP Pro on my main hard drive and boot into Windows 7 or XP whenever needed.

Well, I'm in for 2 HPs from two different places after one wouldnt put another in my basket.

Can't see me needing anything Pro offers and dont feel like getting stung double the money for something I don't need.

Now to see how this works out. TBH, I probably won't use my licenses until I upgrade at the end of the RC.. depending on updates etc.

darn it gord! I have ordered 2 x HP and 1 x pro, went to cancel the pro after your wise words and all the HP's have sold out!!! so had to reorder pro!

I thought pro have the compatability mode for xp and HP doesnt. is this true or have i got it wrong?

Now feel I have wasted £45 on pro for know reason!! Curse M$ for there multiple versions!!

Someone posted a link in the old thread to a quite detailed chart of the differences twixt the different versions - more detail than was available in the standard MS one.

Can anyone remember the link?

It's ludicrous to think all the shops have 'run out'. There'll be more. MS will magically step up the pre-order availability very shortly.

Im confused ,,couple of questions please if I buy Windows 7 Pro

1.Do i need a previous windows key to use this ?

2. Is this a full retial copy of an OEM edition ?

3. Will i get to choose 32bit or 64 bit ?

Cheers Baldy

I'm not so sure. Same thing happened in the US last week, now the prices have doubled. We shall see :).. Guess it's just marketing crud.

Well they did say it would be a limited amount of SKU's, so its entirely possoble to run out given the flood of pre-orders this morning.
It just wouldnt make sence for them to sell more than they orgionaly allocated to each supplier at the discounted price otherwise there would be no one left to price gouge after October :o
