Spurred on by many threads about hog fever I was wondering how many of you have actually had real 'flu. I'm not talking about heavy colds, I'm talking about full blown influenza that relegates you to bed for 5 days, you just can't move, can't eat and you lose lots of weight.

I had it in 2007 and swore I'd get the free 'flu jabs at work from then on. I was off work for 3 weeks, lost about 1/2 stone and it took me ages to recover properly

No. A lot of people think they've had it, but I gather you REALLY know if you have it, if you can't get out of bed rather than just having a bad cold or something (as you said).

Nope never had it, but a pet hate of mine is people who say they've got "The Flu" when in fact all they are is weak pussies with a cold and can't cope.

I've heard "Flu" is pretty bad though, a 3 week off work and ½stone sounds like it's a bit of a sod to have :(

I had flu about 5 years ago, just after Xmas in my first term exam week, typical. I forced myself to go into the exams but I was totally screwed up finished one of my papers in 20 minutes and fell asleep with my head on a wooden lab bench afterwards while others finished. I was sleeping all the time, couldnt eat, lost weight, running hot and cold, awful and it lasted 3 weeks too. Still passed all 5 of my exams though :)

A few times - the worst symptom being the fever and associated nightmares. The aches are a bit of a pain too (hoho!).

uhuh....my lecturer told us that in East Kent, they only usually have about 3-5 cases a year of flu.

Had it twice that I can remember. First time I was about 14 and laid up in bed for 3 days straight, mostly sleeping. Don't remember much about it apart from the whole-body aches. I had it last autumn as well, full on cold sweats, body aches, nausea etc. Lasted about 3 or 4 days before I could eat.

Yeah I had back in 2005, knocked me for 6. The cold sweats were the worst for me, just used wake up absolutely sodden, that included the bed sheets. Oh the hallucinations were fun too, I became convinced one night I was involved in some weird game show where every 30 minutes I had to try sleeping in a different part of the bedroom.

I get seriously weird hallucinations with the flu. Had it twice when I was younger, around 10-11 years old. It's nasty, kept thinking there were people in the room that weren't!

Yup, remember crying out for mum (eh, I was only about 13) because I was swinging hot and cold so often that I couldn't stop piling on/stripping off my clothes, jumping in and out of bed, big headache, generally horrible.

Can't remember how long that lasted for but it ended up in laryngitis and me losing my voice. I was at school writing things I wanted to say on a notepad, my proper voice didn't really return until about 6 weeks later...

yes lost nearly two stone about 6 or 7 years ago. had it twice as far as i can remember. also just got over something which not sure was swine flu (one of friends had it confirmed they had it) it wasnt overly bad apart from the chest area which feels like your having a heart attack :( nearly week on now and feel just about ok.

gp advice was to stay in doors and if bad to get someone to get tamiflu .

most of the swine flu trash talk is just over hyped crap its only really if you are really ill / old or young 99 percent of time you might have a problem.

Yeah I did! Its on par with food poisoning!
You know you have it when you consider wetting/soiling the bed just so then you dont have to get up!
I wouldnt want to have it again!
