Sorry guys - You can probably tell I'm a newbie.

I'm looking for filters.... I don't want any special effect one's - Just UV and to protect the lens...

....So what should I be looking at?

also - What does 'Haze' mean?

Thanks

You should be looking at hoods. ;)

There's a thread on here somewhere recently, someone posted the same picture with and without a uv filter and the image quality difference was quite obvious.

Kenko are Hoya, and are reasonably cheaper.

Keep in mind that was a cheap, £5 job I was using just to show that it's a false econemy to buy cheap :) Hoya/Kenko are ok but B&W and Tiffen are better.

if you use a good filter you shouldnt notice a difference. personally i favour hoya pro for protective/UV.

Which would people recommend out of the following? The extra price on the Hoya tells me it should be better, but who knows.

Hoya 58mm SHMC PL-CIR filter for £37.16 or
Kenko 58mm Pro 1D CPL Digital filter for £29.73

I would go with;

B+W 58mm MRC UV Filter F-PRO for £18.90 :)

But I want a polarizer, and the B+W version seems to be £58.22 (or £89.91 in MRC form) :).

If yu pay ~£500 for a precision optic, it doesn't make sense to shoot it through a poor grade peice of non-flat glass :)

Hoya SHMC is as cheap as I'd go with the lenses I have now, still not 100% happy there either. A cheaper lens won't be resolute enough to show up the differences, though, which is why cheap filters often end up on the front of cheap lenses.

I go for lenshoods when it comes to protection, mainly because I can't currently afford decent frontend filters at the moment!

For when I'm out on the lake or on a beach etc i've bought a Canon UV Filter, managed to find one for about 12 quid so figured why not...

In terms of hoods... which 58mm one would you recommend? does it matter in the slightest?

I'm told that Kenko use the same glass as Hoya, i.e. that the Pro range of each is the same. Can't back that up with fact, just relating what I've been told.

As for protection or not, well I have a 24-105 with a lovely little dint in it from a previous owner. Make your own mind up.

Front elements are pretty resilient things, and the nature of optics means that you can shoot through an incredibly dusty and even chipped front element and it never show up on your photos.
