Legit place to buy CD keys?

1000s and 1000s of people TECHNICALLY break the law on a day to day basis.

TECHNICALLY circumventing copy protection is illegal, but take it to court and see how far the prosecutor gets when it was circumvented for an act that falls within fair use.

The law is out-dated and shows no sign of catching up with the times at any decent pace. Nobody cares that it is technically illegal, all they care about is the consequences.

Circumventing copy protection is so minor nobody is going to waste their time chasing you for it. Circumventing copyright protection, generating your own game keys and making a business out of it is something entirely different. The OP is not breaking copyright law for profit, he wants to buy a legit game key and use it.

As a response to the OP: Just bought a cd key for Dawn of War 2 from ozcdkeys.com, registered on Steam and downloading from Steam now. £12.39 ($25 AUS).

But since 99% of games and DVDs have DRM, this is a moot point surely, since it's illegal to circumvent copy protection.

Good luck finding a copy that doesn't need an illegal crack.

My point was you can download the game from x / y / z and use your legit key with the data you've just downloaded, and it be no different from buying the CD retail version from a shop.

I don't beleive 99%, or any number close to that have DRM?

There are none. Too good to be true normally is.

If you get away with it good luck to you but I would definately only use paypal and not your credit card if I were you ;)

No need to say stuff you know nothing about, the Polish/Singaporian G2play site is well known and many people have bought from it fine... Too good to be true? Come on...

Hmmm that's interesting . Didn't hear anything about them cocking up, all I heard were happy mates so far who play their cheaply bought games on steam :o. Sry :o.

i know a few people who used such sites to buy keys only for them to get blocked at a later date... just not worth the risk imo

Ouch! Glad I didn't go near those guys now. I was tempted at one point, but did indeed seem to good to be true :)

You missed out then!

The key cost me £12.50 odd from them, and when I heard about the annoucement from cyanide I emailed them, they refunded me straight away and my key still works.

Its a legitmate site, I'll continue to buy from there.

Thats like saying my KeyGen must be legal as it works.

Just because something works doesnt mean that the keys are legitimate.

The only difference is that you actually paid for the key and not downloaded it. It still doesnt make it legitimate, which I think is the OP's question.

I think the thing you have to ask yourself is why dont the other big online shops do it if it is legitimate? Probably because its not. Could be wrong but I am sure more people would be doing it if it were above board.

A lot of these sites dont even offer the game as a download from them. You have to "find" it by other means.

Doesnt that tell you something...

Out of curiosity, what happens when you get blacklisted on steam?

edit: ah read it wrong, i thought your account was blacklisted, just that copy of anno right?

That's right, just for Anno. The game requires to be unlocked once it's been installed, Tages activation. It failed at this point as the key had been black listed.

Its already been explained where the codes come from. The problem the game developers have is they make a huge markup on UK sales compared to ones in other countries, therefore if UK buyers were to buy the cheaper items from abroad they wouldn't make as much profit, hence them trying to stop it.

I don't believe the codes are stolen, as the site would have been shut down long ago if they were.
Either way, you get a legitimate copy of the game, the developer gets their money, win/win as far as I'm concerned.
