Noctua NH-U12P & i7 @ 3.8 Temps

I have been trying and trying to setup the Noctua heatsink with my i7 bundle from OCuk - yet every time the idle temps are around 50c and full load reaches over 90. I've tried spreading the thermal paste, putting a tiny rice amount, using the Arctic Silver instructions etc yet nothing seems to change.

Has anyone else set this heatsink up with the i7 and what temps have you go - also what thermal paste method did you use?

I used the line method (from the Arctic Silver website). At 3.9GHz I have 40C idle and 70-75C load. However, this went up to the high 80s when we had the 32C heatwave as opposed to the fine 20C we have now.

I used Akasa Pro 460 paste and got the same temps as with the Noctua paste and I was getting idle temperatures of 45-50*C and load temps of 82*C @ 3.6 and I reseated the heatsink about 7 or 8 times.

I finally found the problem was that I hadn't set the fans up in Push Pull properly.. It was Pull-Pull :P So make sure your fans are set like this:

<---- Case Exhaust Fan <---- Fan1 <<HS<< Fan2 <----

There are arrows on the sides of the noctua fans so you know which way the airflow goes.. It should be that the one closest to the back of your case has the noctua logo facing outwards (so that you can see it) and you should have the other set so that the noctua logo is facing the heatsink so that you can't see it.

After setting it up like this I'm at the same temps as DragonQ

Also what are your voltages?

Edit

DragonQ, do you have Turbo on? ie. x21 multi for the 3.9?

byron_hinson, my temps are nearly exactly the same as yours using Noctua NH-U12P at the same 3.8GHz. 50c idle and 87c load. I did reseat once removing the AS5 and using the Noctua NT-H1 but didn't make that much difference. That said I really don't think it's anything to worry about.

I think the case could be the main cause, I know my Lian Li doesn't have great cooling for sure, what's yours?

I used the spread it with your finger method.

Temps:
40-43 Idle
70-75 Load

Vcore:
1.287 BIOS
1.264 Windows Idle
1.248 Windows Load

Yeah I have turbo on (185x21 under load). I'm using 1.21875V for CPU voltage in the BIOS right now, which is apparently 1.208V when idle according to CPU-Z.

Damn my chip is crap. I've got to be at 1.30625V Vcore to stay stable with 186x21 (D0 too!). Luck of the draw I guess. Sucks though.

He is right, I use my finger method to spread it out on the cpu processor chip and also on the cpu cooler heatsink as well.

Temp:
44, 42, 44, 42 Idle
73, 71, 72, 70 Load (6 hours prime 95) 77, 74, 75, 73 Load (60 mins Linx)

Vcore:
1.231 BIOS
1.200 Windows Idle
1.184 Windows Load

That's for my 4.00GHz (200x20) 36x and 16x 8.0 (1600MHz) at 8.8.8.24.1 (1.600v)
