Have you ever had 'flu?

I think I may have been one of those types who would assume that they'd contracted "the flu" when in reality all they had was a bad cold. That was until I had a severe bout of it some 5 years ago. I honestly thought I was going to die at the time. I have to say that acute fever and the proceeding delirium it gives you was nothing short of terrifying (from what I remember - I was pretty out of it). And even when that passed, I still felt too ill and emaciated to move for a couple of days, not to mention the fact that I sweated so much I thought I'd actually peed in my bed. Took me a while to get over it too; I didn't feel 'right' for a month or two after.

'Toxic' by Britney Spears was playing on the television one night I couldn't sleep and was trying to take my mind off how wretched I felt. I still have an irrational hate of it to this day as a result (also that it's bloody awful too).

Once, was possibly one of the worst 7 or 8 days of my life. Not even being able to stand up properly to get a drink. Every muscle in your body feels sore.

I have to lol at this. You certainly wouldn't be making posts on a forum if you have influenza right now. You'd be in your bed, too weak to even lift up a fifty pound note if someone dropped it on the floor next to you. Sounds like you've got a bad cold to me and that's all you've had before. Real flu is surprisingly rare and particularly nasty.

The influenza virus doesn't have to have such severe symptoms.

Around 50-60 million people get seasonal flu in the US. Thats 20% of the US population. They aren't all delirious in bed.

edit:

In fact simple symptoms like coughs and fever don't always occur

Unless you're posting from bed, I think it's Man Flu.

Reading this thread is brilliant. I've had flu twice, the first time much worse than the second. I had massive changes in body temperature, felt like I needed to throw up constantly and couldn't eat or drink. Best thing though was the halucinations, at times there were things hiding in my cupboard, really freaked me out. When I finally got some sleep I was a coin in one of those funny charity boxes where you push it in, the coin rolls around the edges before disappearing into the void (what are they called!?). Not much fun at the time, but looking back it was quite interesting. The second time I had flu, none of the fun, just felt really awful and could barely leave the house for about a week.

Had gastric flu a couple of times, most recently last year. Both times I was out for about a week.

For me the worst part is the delirium, especially when you're trying to sleep.
I was convinced I was in some utterly bizarre situations that were screwing with my mind and no matter what I couldn't shake the feeling.

How incredibly patronising. Oh look here comes the keyboard warrior/authority on a medical matters! Jesus Christ. Im not going to list my symptoms like some sob story on here but I match/ed every symptom of flu, most likely swine flu. 'real flu' is rare!? a) Medically what is 'real flu', doctor? b) flu is rare? Not according to The stats in London at the moment. Go and polish your guns.;)
This thread is full of people whining about how hard their illnesses were - fairly pathetic imo.

every time i am off work with a cold, i use to state i had flu. tbh i didnt know the difference until flu hit me, in 2004.

my body was shaking and i couldnt move and felt cold. i was so ill, i couldnt even make the call to the office to let them know i was not well. i couldnt eat and all i drank was lucazade.

took me about 5 days, before i recovered.

never have i experianced anything like that.

i heard you only get real flu, a couple of times in your life time.

I've only had the flu twice that I know of, once when I was a kid and was supposed to be going to see the premier of Return of the Jedi (yes, the original, and I was gutted) and once about 11 years ago when I honestly thought I was going to die, started as a mild chest infection then it really hit and crippled me for nearly a week and ended with a nice bit of Pneumonia, all over the Christmas period too. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I had it about 10 years ago at Christmas. All my limbs and joints ached an I had a seriously high temperature. I just sat in a chair drifting in and out of consiousness for a couple of days then took 3-4 days more to fully recover.

I remember my ex waking me up all the time to moan about having to do all the work, then she got it as I was still recovering. Karma tbh.

I've had it a couple of times, each time is a high fever, mad joint pain and basically immobilisation until it passes. Far, far, far worse than any "cold".

Once that I remember, I was about 10. Couldn't move. Dad even had to help me to the toilet to pee.

Had fevers in general a few times though.
