co-op ID rant

Firstly I'll start by stating that i'm 25 years old and since i was 18 i've RARELY had to get the ID out to buy alcohol/cigarettes in supermarkets, offlicences, newsagents.

I've noticed over the past few monthes all these places have been extremely tough on ID's, which doesn't offend or bother me too much as it does state "under 30" or "under 25" we're gonna ask you for ID.

I went into co-op today to buy ciggys and the guy behind the counter ID's me, then he reaches under the counter and pulls out a logbook.

I ask what he's doing and he say's he's writing down my name, age and address. WTF!...I said he doesn't have a right to log that down and asked politely that I don't want my details written down and just to be served. He refused so i left with nothing.

Seriously...what the hell is wrong with this country? I think writing down personal details is taking things too far

It's supposed to be done. We got a right rollicking from Head Office because we didn't keep ours up to date.

Don't like it? Talk to your MP. These rules are made at government level.

Meh, they are going to know who you are if you buy things on card anyway... Though it does sound a bit trivial to write your name down in a book for all the staff to check though each time they id someone....

They have to keep a record of every time they ID someone, but I'm not sure they should be taking down your personal details like that.

few shops near me do this, its quite handy if you forget your ID, they can check the book and give you your stuff.

What exactly do you think they are going to do with the information?

Yep, sadly it's true. Supposed to be name, address, age, what they're wearing, etc.

I can tell you now, when I worked at Tesco we just gave up doing it - all we got was a load of attitude for filling out a pointless book.

But I know the police came down on Head Office like a ton of bricks because nobody in our "area" was bothering either - hence the irate phone call and staff meeting about it.

I still don't think it gets filled in, but no doubt some stores do try and enforce it.

thing is, i've never come across this before or heard of it.

I didn't realise it was normal policy across England now

Yeah i work at sainsburys and were sposed to fill out a details of what the person was trying to buy, our name and a comment about why you id'd them in a challenges/refusals book. It's annoying but it's what I'm told to do!

The policy when I've worked the bars at festivals has just been to note the date, type of id used and weather we served or not, never any mention of personal details

This is absolutely not normal policy for Tescos at least.

Writing refusals down is though, which is what people are getting confused with.
In essence, we need to keep a record of who we've refused, as this can be used as evidence that we are correctly implementing an ID policy. (If there are no refusals being written down, there is no evidence that they have occured)
In addition, it can prove a useful tool in banning repeat offenders.

our store doesn't do any logging of ID checks at all, seems very odd indeed...

edit: should say "our tesco store"

We were told to get an address if it's on the proof of age. Apparantly if the police want to chase it later it "helps with their enquiries".

I just want to make it clear, I don't agree with this system, it doesn't really work.

A club in Lincoln normally does this untill around 12pm. It's a right pita, causes a massive que at the bar!!

Nonsense. I work for Co-op and this is not our practice. We take a description of the person, what they attempted to buy and why we have refused to sell but NEVER ask for personal details.

Write to Co-Op's head office. They'll send you a crap ton of vouchers and probably sack some heads!

I'll bet you a million pounds neither will happen. The cashier was complying with company policy, if you were them wouldn't you want this person to be doing exactly as they did?
