I am off to the Emirates stadium for a tour on Saturday (18th) (Anyone done this tour?) and im wondering what else is near by? Like is there any shops/restaurants etc? I wll be travelling from Milton Keynes by train, what is the nearest station to get off at?

Yes thanks:) Whose doing your tour? I had Kenny Sansom. Closest train station is Finsbury Park, closest tube is either Drayton Park, Arsenal, Finsbury Park, or Highbury and Islington.

No shops in that area, lots of pubs, and the dodgy Holloway Road.

I dont know whos doing it, I wasnt told lol? How many people were on your tour?

Hmm doesnt sound much at all to do after, straight back home then!

I would get off at Finsbury park station and walk to the ground, you will be able to walk past the old ground as well and take in abit of nostalgia maybe. lol

Yes, i took my son last year.. We got off at the Arsenal still, 3 minute walk. Should an Arsenal fan know this :p

I have to admit, being a Spurs fan, it's very impressive. I went to the nou camp a few weeks back and not even that comes any where near the impressive Emirates

Toke some pics :

A plaque in the reception area commemorates the opening of the stadium by HRH Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh. The queen was supposed to have done this but was too ill to attend (I know how she feels) and the special guest book dating back over a hundred years had been prepared for her. haha Shame that.

I'm not sure why the designersleft concrete fascia between the glass.. Think it would have been better all round glass.

Awesome views from here.. You’ll notice too (for anyone who hasn’t been to the Emirates), the honours surrounding the stadium in chronological order, with a big gap for their next. This has been empty for a while now..

It looks strange seeing the pitch with no white lines and goal posts.. The grass has been re-laid quite recently and is being prepared for the new season. I was interesting to learn that Arsenal paid over 2m for a lawn system which blows warm air from under ground, and automatically adjusts to current conditions, keeping the top soil at optimal grass growing conditions. If the pitch start to get to wet, the system will suck the water out automatically. There are even sun lamps to help the grass grow over area that are otherwise in the shade.

My son had the cheek to ask my to buy him a DVD of the Arsenals greatest victories over Spurs ... **** ***

Seriously, it's a good day out and you'll be shown round by a club historian too.

Drayton Park is closet, but is closed on Match days ;)

Some of the tours are by ex-pro's. I was shown round Highbury by Charlie George:cool:

Victoria line straight up to Finsbury Park.

Oh wait, TfL suck balls, and have closed the Victoria line for 3 weekends in July.

So walk along to Kings Cross (or get the Northern line if you're feeling lazy), then hop on the Piccadilly line and hop off at Arsenal, the Emirates is just round the corner.

Drayton Park is an overground stop. I'd get off at Arsenal. Easy enough to get to, nearest (bar DP), and as said, you can walk past what remains of Highbury that way.

Also, while Holloway Road is full of grocery shops and takeaways, if you don't mind walking down a bit, you can get to Upper Street, which has tons of restaurants on it.

lol, good on him, the pitch is seriously impressive though, someone from Wembley needs to take the Emirates tour, and learn how to lay a damn pitch right.

Have yet to see a single game at the Emirates where the pitch has been dodgey, can't understand how the Wembley guys screw it up time after time.

Really need to go on the tour myself as I've not been yet, and I didn't do the Highbury tour either before it was too late.

Not a huge amount to see around the stadium but 3 mins walk to the station and you're 10 mins away from a whole load of crap in very central london so If you've got the time i'd make a day or it, Emirates, then on to see/do some other stuff around there. Could even get the tube around to go stand outside chelsea/spurs stadiums and see how small they are :p

Well what a total disaster! And I am very dissapointed with Arsenal.

My tour was due to start 2:45pm on Saturday 18th, but I woke up really unwell and I was not able to make the tour, I phoned up to cancel, but there offices were closed and only open Mon - Fri, 9 - 5. So I phoned yesterday, only to be told I have to ring them 24hours before or after to cancel.....wtf, great. So I have been screwed over by my own team!

After looking at the Terms and Conditions on the Arsenal website it states "Should you wish to cancel your tour, please inform a member of the tour department at least 24 hours prior to your tour date and time."

So am I supposed to presume I am going to be unwell and not able to make it? Is it worth complaining ?

Although your illness was genuine, there are those that would use "illness" as an excuse to cancel and both the club and wanting visitors will be loosing out. I'm not saying this is your case but you see my point?

I guess, I just feel really let down. I have 1) Never been to Highbury or the Emirates and 2) It was a voucher I got for Xmas I had all year to use, I waited till the summer months to go and I get this :(

I think it's because Wembley allow different sports and whatnot to take place there, while not allowing the grass to properly recover. A recent England match that took place there got lots of attention because it was too soon after an American football game.

Our pitch guy or groundsman's gone to Spain I think. :(

Yeah gone to Real Madrid, they announced it before one of the matches last season.

I normally come back via Highbury & Islington simply because you don't have to queue up for ages like you do at Arsenal after a match. Plenty of places to eat and drink along Holloway Road.

As an aside, does anyone know when the Pompey match will go on sale? Normally red members can buy 1 month before, but there's no ticket information up for it yet (22nd August).

Tickets aren't even on sale for the Everton game yet (to any members), i'd imagine the Pompey ones will be available from the 3rd onwards. Hopefuly will be taking my Daughter to see it :).

Do'h, we need to go get that groundman back, but then the most suprising thing is that Real Madrids most important transfer target was signed and it wasn't in the news :o

AS to getting a little screwed with illness, I understand however, I don't think i've been to a venue for anything, seeing a band, a match of some kind, a train/bus/plane ticket, a dentists appointment, nothing, where there hasn't been the stipulation that you have to cancel X amount of hours before you're booked or you are charged for it. Its completely standard and understandable.

If you book a dentists hour up and don't show and don't tell them, they've got no chance to get someone else in and lose money they would have otherwise earned, so they lose money by giving you a refund.

If it was a basic tour by whatever given security guard happens to be free thats one thing, but assuming they pay ex-Arsenal players to take you through the tour, then when you don't turn up they still have to pay for that guy to do the tour even if you aren't there. Maybe a tad harsh, but its so completely standard I have no idea why you're surprised tbh.

Wembleys pitch is worse because of other sports, but theres also a serious problem in that other venue's with similar pitches have done much better. They've said it hasn't lasted as well as expected basically because they completely misjudged how to take care of it and they put down the wrong kind of grass thats far to easy to break up and damage.

Supposedly they put in a new mure durable surface this time around, but my guess would be the system they have in place, drainage, heating, watering, just isn't good enough anyway, different better turf might improve it but its never going to be great.

I wrote a complaints letter just because I felt the need to let them know and get it off my chest, and they are HAPPY to rebook the tour for meeee!!!!! :D

YAY!

I should complain more often lol!
