Weight training & Cardio on the same day question..

Hi all.

I've finally decided to get back on to doing some weight training after not doing it in years. First thing I've had to get over is the despair at only lifting half the weight I used to on some exercises, and now there's getting used to eating a lot more calories during the day!

Anyway, I was wondering whether there was a big issue if I did some cardio excercise on the same day as weight training? It'd probably be something like weights in lunchtime and then squash ~7pm in the evening.

My week should go roughly like this:
monday - weights
tuesday - squash
wednesday - weights
thursday - running
friday - weights & squash

Weekends are really difficult for me over the summer so I really need to cram it all in during the week :( Should I be OK as long as I eat enough?

My goals are to improve my cardio fitness further (and my squash game, which is pretty awful) and build muscle. Not the easiest one to do I guess but I am trying!

I do it everyday. I do weights first then cardio after. Sometimes I'll separate the times, cardio in the morning and weights in the evening.

depends on how much time you have i guess.

If you want to improve your cardio fitness than you need to do some cardio :p However it will negatively impact building muscle if you are not eating enough to replenish all the extra calories being used. If you eat enough then great, you will just have to find your own balance.

I disagree, doing weights with short rest times or circuit style weights sessions will see vast improvements to your cardio fitness and even muscle gain if you push yourself. (Provided you're eating well also)

Doesn't that mean you agree? :p

OP: Looks alright, except I'd maybe question the running on thursday but it depends what type of running and if you're just training for sport specific fitness

Just general fitness - would be something like a 30-40min jog

Fitness is really sports specific mate. Unless you're looking to become really good at jogging then I'd drop that on thursday and use it as a rest day. Either that or throw in a high intensity sprint session that will benefit your squash game.

Well, I would like to get a lot better at running, and I will have the weekends as rest days as such over the summer

I don't do any cardio work so I agree with you, but my main goal isn't to improve cardio vascular performance, where as the OP has stated it is.
