Why do people bother "working out"?

I'd never let myself become obsessed by getting toned / muscled up, but I miss feeling fit and healthy, as I was very fit between 16 and 23, and I've let it slip for the last few years.

I'm now well on my way to getting back to a decent standard, losing the right amount of weight at a safe rate, improving run times all the time, and I can see the difference it's making to my body already. Muscles are starting to re-appear, waistline is returning to normal, self confidence is scraping itself off the bottom of the barrel again, I'm not anywhere near as tired as I used to be all the time, I don't sweat as much as I used to, I feel far more awake and alert through my day, and I sleep like a baby at night.

All that positive stuff just from getting up at six every day, going for a wee run, doing a bit of upper body stuff every second day, and going to bed at ten during the week. An hour of effort at the very most, including warm-ups and cool-downs, and the benefits it brings are just so great. And not a minute of it done in any gym, nor will it ever be.

To the OP, you know what? If you're happy with yourself, what does it matter what everyone else is up to? Don't stress about it, just enjoy life the way you want to. :)

I tried the gym to get fit but it's boring as hell so I stopped going. I can't understand how people enjoy it. Much prefer my 360 and PS3.

Which requires a cash injection of about £700 for something decent.

got a power rack/lat pull down attachment, inc/dec bench, Oly BB set + 100KG all for 373 brand spankers delivered a couple of months ago.

so within 9 months of going to the gym would have paid for that...

well worth it for me personally, no more waiting around for equipment to be free, no pressure and can work out in my own time now.

obviously over time more weights will be needed but it isn't that expensive for an extra 50kg now and then...

Because I like to improve myself, feel more active, energetic and healthier.
It's pretty evident you don't have any motivation to do so, so its not worth explaining it to you.

5k  What do you have?
One disadvantage of tanks strength :p

He has a slight point. Saying you don't like exercise is one thing, and how it doesn't bother you. But saying you seriously cant understand why people do it seems far fetched.

I understand the end result..i dont understand how anyone can be arsed because it is so boring and such hard work which has to be maintained forever :)

which says a lot for you as a person ;)

other people are different and like to improve themselves. simples.

Its a good feeling to know that you are stronger and fitter then 95% of the population. If you've ever acheived anything in your life then you'd know why people do it. I get huge sense of elation from say running a marathon or breaking a squat PB. I'm of the opinion that you can not lead a complete life if you neglect a major aspect of it... exercise and health are certainly a part of life!

You're lazy with little motivation to improve yourself for you or any significant other.

Lol, really? So going and lifting some weights up and down means that i am a better person? Will my friends and family all love me more because i am such a big strong man?

Will i be a better person if i decide to like football too?

Would you stop loving her if she did put on weight?

You have to be physically attracted to someone for a relationship to work. If your partner becomes unattractive to you, it would be very difficult to maintain that relationship.

Thankfully I've never been put in that position.

I go to the gym because I am a fat ******* and to keep fit I dont do weights to bulk. I enjoy my food which is a healthy balanced diet (not in the losing weight sense) but do eat too much of it but also I work in an office all day so dont get any excersise at work at all.

I found that as I got older (past 28) my weight started to pile on pretty quickly and IMO its worth getting fit for health reasons the older you get so that you can have a fit an active life in your older years.
