Why do people bother "working out"?

I find that working out motivates me more.

Infact I'm enrolling in a gym tomorrow, initially for six months, to get myself in shape for snowboarding. I've tried 'running' on the roads but I have no motivation without a club. So I'm going to get fitter then start spinning at 6:30 :D

TBH i more mean that.

Vixen - what is your take on bodybuilding? Every woman i have ever known (inc my o/h) hates the look of huge (lul) men.

I agree with you about bodybuilding. I think people look best toned and firm, anything extreme in either direction from there looks awful. By toned I mean no obvious fat but not necessarily obvious muscle either.

Who cares? Was this whole thread just to tell us then that you don't like going gym?

Fair enough. Thanks for the info. I don't particularly like it either, but I enjoy the end result.

So you dont enjoy it? Does that not make you incredibly vein to do something that you dont enjoy purely to improve your body which probably doesnt need improving?

If people enjoy it cool, thats the same as anything. But your scenario makes me chuckle.

Of course it makes me vain. I want to look better as Im overweight. I also want to be fitter and healthier. You may think you're better because you don't care about such things. I don't, however, care. You have no idea about my personal situations or the motivations which made me decide to join a gym.

And I wasn't entirely accurate, I do actually sometimes enjoy the gym. Long cardio sessions can be a bit tiresome is probably more what I meant.

What do you make of visible abs? Showy, only for posers? Intimidating? Would you rather just see a flat stomach that is undefined?

Similarly, do you drive a fancy car because it makes you feel better? Your scenario makes me chuckle.

No, i drive a fancy car because its the best car i could afford at the time. It doesnt make me feel better or worse.

Nothing to do with it arnie :)

I do it because I feel better. If I dont go to the gym for a while, I feel weak and terrible. Humans have muscles which were meant to be used. Most of us dont use them than other to do mundane tasks. Go to the gym for a while with a proper rest and diet regieme and see how you feel. ;)

If you are overweight and need to lose weight then thats totally understandable, i am not questioning why someone would go to lose weight. The thought was me wondering how people who go pointlessly can possibly enjoy doing so. Imagine i had posted that i dont "get" football, it would be the same kind of observation :)

I freely admit I want to look better though. I am not dangerously overweight. I don't need to lose weight, but I felt that I wanted to.

That said, I would, at some point, probably cancel my gym membership when I feel Im happy about the way I look, if Im not enjoying it anymore.

Now, i am not talking about people who need to lose weight due to health issues, and proper issues such as this.

I am talking about people who actually go to the gym to "tone up" and "body build", before going they were normal people, perfectly healthy (to an extent which meant that they were able to live their life without hindrance etc).

I don't get it. I have a beer belly, and am now on the higher end of BMI "normal/healthy" range, and i don't care one little bit. Neither do my friends, neither do women, so who actually does? I eat whatever i want when i want, i don't bother with the gym (almost see it as working without pay tbh), i don't bother exercising beyond a normal "active" lifestyle and although not toned i am a normal regular looking "bloke".

I see so many people obsessed with the gym and stuff

:/

I care. Fat beer bellys offend my eyes.

I don't lift weights very often but I train in JuJitsu and Muai Thai, mainly because I enjoy it and I want to compete in MMA. I do have to hit the weights now and then because I want to be the best I can at my chosen sport, which requires me to be as strong, fast and powerful as I can in my given weight class.

I love the feeling after and exhausting hour of Jujitsu or Thai, I do not enjoy the burn after a weights session but I do it because I need to.

It depends how visible. I'm finding it difficult to describe the point I would say is too far, so vague terms are the best I can do! I think abs only start to look silly when the upper body turns into a triangle shape. Brad Pitt style abs are very nice though ;).

People do jobs they don't enjoy so they can afford houses and cars, it's the same thing.

I don't think there's anything particularly vain about wanting to improve your health and fitness.

I also don't think there's anything wrong with being vain, you shave, cut your hair etc. You may not enjoy it but you do it for the end result.
