i use to have xp professinal 64bit but had loads of problems getting my software to work on it so this time round i bought vista 64bit home basic and find out that my programmes need vista premium at least. can i exchange my home basic for premium or will they not accept it back..if not is there an easy way to upgrade to premium or swill i just buy a new vista premium and reboot the computer

What programs are you using that require Vista premium, I didn't know programs made a distinction between Basic -> Ultimate, or am I sorely misguided?

You can use Windows Anytime Upgrade to move from Home Basic to Home Premium but it isn't cheap.

If I was you, I'd install Windows 7 Release Candidate (Windows 7 Ultimate) for free

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx

which will last until March 2010.

Then look to preorder Windows 7 Home Premium which can be done for £45 for delivery on October 22nd this year.

Sell Home Basic on an auction site. Won't get anything close to the ~£65 price of the oem version though.

edit: As skyfall said, it is bizarre that software requires home premium. Does it work on XP?
