virgin to cut 50mb prices

I would love this as long as I can self-install and they are not going to start STM on the 50Mb line.

they have to alter the signal levels from your box on the wall so wont let you do a self install.

It breaks down as £30 install, and £20 for the 90 second phonecall the engineer makes to activate the line back at HQ

as for the STM, Virgin said the 50mb will remain stm free untill rollout is complete. They now say roll out is complete but are going to stay stm free for now. This wont last for ever but atm its still un-managed

Nope they wont let you - £50 for a engineer to plug it it!

Thanks for the info guys..
I will wait and see what happens with the install fee maybe they will lower it..

They wanted a £50 to install it - Told them to sod off!

They need to drop there prices to compensate for crap customer service and bad billing issues.

I've been charged incorrectly seven months running by virginmedia, each month being totally different from the next.

im just lucky i've had the money in my bank when they've cocked up, or i could have been charged by my bank..

(It criminal that virgin have monopolised cable broadband Grrrr )

Well Im damn tempted, currently just out of my last 12month deal.
Think Ill grin and bear the extra few quid a month til sep then hit em for 50Mb.

Surely if you sign up at the point theyre advertising STM free and then they then go onto addin STM that would be a change in service and not what you signed up for? Wouldnt that allow you to get out of the 24month contract.

As for very few people needing the upload...
Have you tried uploading HD quality video files? Raw captures from Fraps?
Painfully slow :(
Even smaller files take an age to upload :(

And yes I use filesharing, Torrents of Korean MMO BETAs and the like are a saving grace when the servers they're officially hosted on run like poop xD

Also as for Virgin monopolising cable broadband, Im sure it wont be too long until BT and the ilk start whining at ofcom and VM are forced to Wholesale their lines. Altho without having a coverage in all areas it may hamper this I would think.

Just had mine installed and even after the tech guy changing all manner of cable bits, it's still maxing out at 41megs according to their own Virgin speed tester.

He told me that they guarantee 40megs so this falls within specs, but still a tad disappointing. Still, I'm downloading a variety of things and Flashget is showing as up to 5000kb/s so it can't be all bad :) He had to swap over my router too, as my old, nicely hacked Linksys WRT54g couldn't pass more than 20megs! Still, this Netgear Wireless N jobbie is nice.

I'm guessing a normal WRT54G with standard firmware on it should be fine, though? :)

Still won't do me anything under £20 on top for 50MB, but said I should be able to get it for what I'm paying now, in September, so will sort it out then :)

I have a hacked WRT54g with dd-wrt on too, would be a complete pig to have to retire it... Anything similar available on the market, or is it time to virtualise the damn thing and use vyatta?

Can I ask what number did you guys phone to speak to anyone with more than 2 brain cells? I just went through to the general broadband support line and they had no clue about the impending price change, not even the 'manager' that I talked to. Then I started linking them to the site and they hung up!
Ridiculous!

I just called them and they wanted £49 a month for 50mb with phone. I am already on 20 with phone so told em to leave it, they also wanted £20 upgrade one of charge :(

call. do they restrict 50mb? if so to what speed?
Still thinking what to do in September stay with sky as I am out of a 12month contract or move to virgin. As it's a better service and on demand.

No restrictions atm on 50meg had mine for 2 months now and i have downloaded lots, ill be amazed if they don't introduce some sort of capping when its at that price in September.

£38 a month if you don't take Virgin's telephone line. A lot better than the £50 a month it is atm. But still pricey unless you have multiple heavy internet users.

they are not capping the 50MB package atm and will not in the future either.

they will eventually, just a matter of time. when the price drop comes I believe they will have a big influx of people move to the 50mb and so the networks will need capping again.

Obviously the longer it stays cap free the better, just cant see it lasting for ever

i don't really need the 50Meg download but having the upload speed would be nice as uploading 720p to youtube takes forever :o
