Why do people bother "working out"?

Stupid thread.

Why do people bother playing sports instead of sitting in the garden and drinking beer? Why do people learn new languages instead of sitting in the garden and drinking beer? Why do people climb mountains instead of sitting in the garden and drinking beer?

To be fair I dont believe in going to the gym :p

I have my own weights in the house....

Can do exercises no problems....

A great Country Park for going a run....

Football played through the week

Does me fine :) Anyways being fit is the healthy thing to do :p

I suppose that you could argue that people are just never satisfied. They want everything better. Humans like us are adapted to store lots of fat in case of a famine. Neanderthals on the other hand were huge (I mean muscle mass)! And because of all the calories they needed, they died out. We want to be like Neanderthals, little fat, lots of muscle

It's not that I can't run 3 miles, I just find it difficult, because I don't run very often. With running I find it hard on my knees/ankles (really damaged my ankle running once) and not very enjoyable.

I'm the same but that's because I have to carry around a 100kg frame and it's sore on the knees, I can run and run and run but it's my knees that would give out before my fitness. I can row well, and row hard and for a decent amount of time whilst covering large distances, as well as cycling etc.. Just because you find it difficult to run doesn't mean you're not fit - whilst running is a good exercise, there are better ones out there - swimming being among the top IMO.

I also find running a bit tiresome, weighing in at 90 kilos doesn't help. I can run for ages on the cross-trainer, but on a treadmill, Im not as comfortable; I begin to feel the pounding in my feet and legs. I feel a bit disheartened that even though I can run for miles on the cross-trainer, I probably couldn't do the same out on the road :(

Give me some good boots, socks, and a bergen weighing 3st and make me go on a tab I'd blitz it no problem.

Make me run the marathon even with good shoes on, whilst I'd be able to complete it I'd be in a poor way (well my knees would be).

I've been going to the gym since February and really enjoy it. I've lost weight, improved my strength quite a bit. I don't go with the aim of body building but with cardio and weights I do look better and I also find the gym a nice place to be. It's almost like a social club. Everyone there is doing the same thing so it's easy to start talking and you end up with a load of new friends. Gym's are great.

And, of course, it's all opinion. I can't fathom out why people listen to the hardcore dance music with MC's going mental and a bass line that never changes. But that's my opinion, I know other people do like it and it doesn't bother me. Life is good when you're more tolerant of others.

I expect my girlfriends to take care of there bodies, girls who take care of there bodies generally like men who take care of there's.

I love going out on my bike for a good 10 mile sprint at night gets the heart going and gets me out of the house. I also love lifting weights because it makes me feel better and gives me a buzz.
I hate anything with an engine and have no interest in passing my driving test and I'm 34, you can give me a nice road bike over a car any day.

Nothing more beautiful than the sight of a fat, lobster-red-from-sunburn Englishman in a pub garden with his England shirt off, resting a pint of Carling on his beer belly, occasionally using a knapkin to wipe the sweat from under his moobs.

Sex on legs.

I work out for that rush you get when you know youve had a good session, and that awesome feeling you get when youve gone balls to the wall and broken your PB's and then theres also the good feeling when your sat in the living room and your female house mate tells you your looking a lot buffer than you used to.

I don't get the point of spending lots of money joining a gym when you can get the equipment for use at home or use council gyms at a lot lower cost.

I also don't get the point of the extreme end of bodybuilding.

I do get the point of why people want to excersize or enjoy it. I'm a cyclist and moutaineer and both provide me with lots of fun and keep me fit without the need to do lots of repetetive work in a hot sweaty gym.

Oh and I'm damn good with the ladies despite being built like a rake (I'm built for speed not comfort or power!) they just love me!

Different strokes for different folks. It's more practical for me to go and use the gyms equipment than it is to scale a mountain :p

I did used to ride a lot when I was younger, but I do so a lot less now. I would probably go swimming before I went cycling now though.

Tell me where you buy your gym equipment...ill be there in a flash...in order to get the minimum of equipment at home id need to drop about 2 grand..

council gyms are rarely well equipped and are almost always dirty and full of idiots.
