Computer games design

I finished Comp games TEch at Portsmouth uni last year, while it didn't really catapault me into the industry, it gave me more of a working knowledge ofhow things are done, and let us play in each role withint the industry to see which we liked best, but therein lies the problem, as I preferred the 3ds max/animation side of things, by the end of the course, I still had very little relevant experience.

best suggestion is to take a course like it, and really force yourself into some sort of speciality, ie, art, textures, characters, rigging etc

I would imagine Computer Science is a lot better if you want to be a programmer and some kind of art course would be better on the art side of things.

Games Design seems to be a mismash of both which I can't see being that good.

I'm due to go to Staffordshire uni to study Computer Games Design and Programming and haven't been all that raring to go.

From what I've been told Stafford and Teeside are the best universities in the country for this lark and obviously nobody wants to be stuck for four years doing something that'll end up being worthless.

Do you think it'd be worth going?

(Demoniser, how did you find Stafford?)

Check that website out and join the forum. Allot of the students and a fair few of the lecturers are members if you have any questions.

I'm going to be studying CS at QUB next year :D, and i've got a few questions

Do they teach the extreme basics in first year, or do they expect you to know a little, e.g. Java etc?
What are the lecture/practical class sizes like in the first year ?
And what are the staff like? I've still got the option of going to UUJ.

Thanks, Neil.

Lectures vary wildly, you'll start with classes of 150 or 300 (full class or half class - this includes ppl from other degrees), this will slim down VERY quickly. Practical classes are usually split down to a third of the class (split into your courses generally).

Shouldn't be hard at all going from nothing to the classes. Hardest thing in first year is learning java, I'd recommend you start now to help you out. It will be invaluable.

You better realise now uni is about self-learning, everything isn't handed to you on a plate. I got super ****ed most of first year and managed to come top of the year and get 300quid for it, simply because I did my own work. Don't fall behind on practicals, you wont catch up. Staff vary too, some good, some not.

Why would you go to UUJ instead? Please don't live at home while at uni, consider places overseas too

To be honest, far too many computing coarses that are doing far too much of the same thing instead of being honest into one direction - stupid unis trying to cater for too many student desires leads to poor output for the industry.

If you really want to get into the games industry - your best bet is to do the coarse but do a lot of extra curricular activities. Like joining open source projects and going under someones wing. Honestly I learned a lot that way. My course taught me nothing of what I know today other than the fundamental basics. And that is by any means - no where near enough.
