is it worth me upgrading to a PII 955?

Are you not satisfied with the performance you're getting at the moment?

EDIT: Just had a look to make sure.. Havent looked at overclocking differences between the two, but you'd be paying £150 pounds for a stock frequency increase of 200MHz.. Doesnt seem worth it at all to me tbh

I guess it would make sense to wait for the 965 (Stock 3.4GHz) if anything and hope they will clock to 4Ghz+ But I can't see you getting much more than 200MHz extra on overclock with a 955 really... I guess it depends if the 965s overclock better than the 955s etc... TBH Its prob not really worth it though.

gareth170 see what the 965 may bring as that 940 is running a good clock as it is.

hi

is it worth me upgrading from a PII 940 to a 955?

To be honest, I'd say no.

Although insanely, I've just done exactly that with my kit, but only because I offloaded the 940, a GA-MA790X-DS4 & 2x2gb Corsair for near enough money to pay about 30-40 quid more for a new 955, GA-MA790FXT-UD5P & 4x2gb Corsair DDR3! The only real reason (other than not costing much) was to move to AM3 for a bit more long term platform stability.

Never clocked the 940 above 3.4, but with the new kit I'll be giving it a good poke and seeing exactly what it'll do.

Back on topic, initially, there's nowt in it so far between the 940 (on my old kit) and the 955 (on my new kit). WoW and a few other games feel a little smoother in places, but that and any other increases could be perceived only and also caused by the PJR* kicking in.

Like others have said though, you shouldn't bother for now.

* Purchase Justification Reflex - the feeling one gets, trying to persaude oneself (and one's spouse/partner, if applicable) that the wad one's just blown on toys really did need blowing!

but, which is worth buying...... i.e the 955 or 965, if all you have is the FX64 right now............ it's about 130 quid compared to maybe 170............. because both will clock to 3.8 ?

only 50 quid difference.... it looks like the best buy is the 965...because that has a higher stock speed.....but is this a con, and all it is is the 955 cranked up to 3.4 ....i've never had a clear answer about this.
