my ageing ip35 pro is having a few issues so im thinking of upgrading to the newer p5q series of boards.

First could someone quickly tell me what the major differences between the pro and turbo models are? There seem to be too many different ones. Do they all overclock the same?

More importantly, is the OCZ pc6400 platinum rev2 ram compatible with this board? The abit refused to boot unless the voltage was increased which was a massive problem along with having 4 sticks of ram.

Cheers
sid

edit / i wil be overclocking in the 3.2 to 3.6 range with my q6600 g0 using a noctua heatsink

Main differences:

PRO

2 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots
3 x PCI Express x1 slots
2 x PCI slots

Turbo

1 x PCIe 2.0 x16
3 x PCIe x1
2 x PCI

Both will hold 16 gb ddr2 ram but the pro with hold 1200mhz and the turbo will hold 1300mhz

The turbo has better oc'ing features.

I could go on but I'll leave it there for now.

Turbo newer. Custom pc really liked it. They don't all overclock the same, but there isn't very much in it.

OCZ works fine with P5Q boards, though played up with mt G35 Asus. Or at least, ocz reaper and the 800mhz gold edition both work brilliantly, the reaper was running quite undervolted at 5-5-5-15.

sorry guys i think I'm gonna look at the E version then as I've got two graphics cards (260 and 9400 for triple screens)

Is it worth stretching to the deluxe version?

Deluxe is an incredible board that has a wealth of OCing features to keep you happy as can be.

Best thing is, the vDroop is minimal/non existent. (Edit, testing this shows the voltage increase from 1.288 to 1.296 under load, 1.3 is set in the BIOS.)

The deluxe is great, though its a bit steep in price now compared to release, the p5qE is a fantastic board at the price.

P5Q-E is the Deluxe with 6-Phase power instead of 12 and no heatpipe to the SB. If you want to save a bit, the E will do perfectly.

P5Q-E is the Deluxe with 8-Phase power instead of 16 and no heatpipe to the SB. If you want to save a bit, the E will do perfectly.
Fixed! :)

@ sid: The ASUS P5Q-Deluxe is the same as the P5Q-E in all aspects except the Deluxe has extra Phases, a built in flash-drive for Express-Gate and the heatpipe connected Southbridge!

The only meaningful difference really is the 16-phases, very popular with Irish Quad Core owners! :p

If your picking up some new Memory than really you should be looking at DDR2-1066 or DDR2-1200, works very well with the ASUS P5Q series!

Ooops, my bad, has been a while since I did all my research on the two lol. :)

16 Phases does come in handy for Quad OCing though :p.

Hey Voxination,

did you try overclocking that Corsair Dominator beyond DDR2-1066 on your P5Q-Deluxe?

Also did it default straight to DDR2-1066? The kit I am testing did and its the first time I seen that with fast memory, they normally get set up as DDR2-800.

It defaulted to 1066 with 2.1v straight away, haven't tried pushing it further yet and have been keeping it under 1066 (Currently at 1024) although I may try and push it up near DDR2 - 1200 speeds. It gets pretty warm to the touch though when under load, and if I put on the airflow fan my CPU temps go up as it messes up the airflow, although when I get myself a more powerful CPU fan then they should cool down too with more air being drawn accross them.

Have you OCed your kit yet or are you holding back for a bit?

If you can be bothered try dialling the voltage down from 2.1v > > 1.82v ;)

I did some simple testing beyond DDR2-1066 but ran into some teething problems, currently running 4GHz (2x2GB) at 550MHz (DDR2-1100) at 1.86vDimm (10 Loops IBT, 12 Hour Prime Large and Windows Memtest stable).

My P5Q Pro wasn't that keen on four 1GB sticks of that OCZ Platinum RAM. I couldn't get it to recognise all the RAM at rated speed, even with lots of volts. I couldn't get four sticks stable beyond about 750MHz.

The only board i was able to run 4x1gb and oc without issue was my old nforce 680i with an E6600, quite a nice board with the dual core, unfortunately it was garbage with a quad. Thankfully my current p5q deluxe overclocks like greased lightning, 3.8ghz from a q6600, currently on 3.8ghz on a q9550 (4ghz soon hopefully)

I'd try lower Voltage Wayne, but as this is my second kit as the first one died, I'll pass on tempting fate :p.

Also, for some reason, it only works in single channel, dual channel leads me to a BSOD on startup, although single channel is fine for me!

Well thats bad news.

Did you find out what was wrong?

edit/ I'm using this ram OCZ Platinum Revision 2 XTC 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Series (OCZ2P800R22GK)

Surely 4x 1GB sticks are "old tech" now, as if you wanted 4GB you'd go for 2x 2GB, to allow scope to go to 8GB.

Don't some mobo's have problems with 4 DIMMs?

Well disaster, Mattus is correct

4x1gb isn't supported in dual channel model on the P5Q range with my ram.

So I'd have to change everything which doesn't seem worth it tbh

edit/ As mentioned in the OP voxination, Im trying to swap out my IP35 pro which seems to do dual channel fine with 4gb mind you. so much for tech advancing.
