I quite like the new Mac Mini 2ghz PC but what would be the equivilent Windows based PC but cheaper?

I like the size of the case. I am looking for a PC about the same size. I don't mind putting my own pc together just not sure what case / components are available to build a nice small, powerful PC. The Mac Mini spec is fine, plus the HD and ram can be upgraded. Just the £500 + price tag is off-putting!

I would imagine an equivalent self build Windows PC would indeed be cheaper, considering that even a 2.5 Ghz Core 2 Duo processor is only around £50, I can't see it costing a fortune, also your graphics card on a Windows PC would undoubtedly be better. Thinking about a similar move myself fancied a Mac but very expensive.
Thinking about building a gaming/work pc, a Mini Mac type Media PC and getting a netbook for travelling.

Don't know enough about the components to put one together. I can build a PC but never specced a mini one before! The Mac is a lovely PC but is it worth the money!!

Does it really need to be that small ? mATX are pretty tiny in all fairnuss and will no doubt be cheaper/better.

If you're okay to go without the C2D and have an Atom then the Asus Eee Box Atom is about the same size as a Mini Mac (in fact possibly a bit smaller).

Otherwise you probably want to buy a bare bones system from Asus / Shuttle that'd be a little bigger than a mini mac but would have much more potential upgrade size than a mini mac

sugo sg05 / zotac 775 mini-itx board / e8400 would come out significantly under 500 and be far quicker than the mac.

I'm not going to bother checking the dimensions of the mac mini vs the sugo/other mini-itx case, you can do that yourself

Asus do a couple, "Eee Box" is small mac mini equivalents just use Google as we cannot post competitor links.

Isn't the Eee Box powered by an Atom chip and thus isn't comparable to a Mac Mini?

To the OP, if you want something like a Mac Mini to run Windows then get a Mac Mini. Get out your wallet and pony up the cash and stop being a cheapskate! :p :D

I don't really know much about the Eee Box I was just going by size because he said desk space was at a premium.

Personally I would save up a little longer and get a Mac Mini and use boot camp to run windows when I needed it. But I was just providing an alternative.

Mac mini is 16.5x16.5x5cm
The mini itx board itself is 17x17x4cm.

So yes, any mini-itx case is going to be at least a cm per side longer. What did you expect?

Nearest thing I can think of is the Dell Studio Hybrid, price isn't much better but £480 gets you one with a 2GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB of RAM (double the Mac Mini), and a 250GB HDD (again, double the Mini). Also comes with a keyboard and mouse which the Mac doesn't, although you can subtract a whopping £5 if you choose to go without!

No. Like a proper keyboard, mouse and TFT.

Well, i may just go for a Mac Mini and then in the future upgrade the ram to 4gig and possibly put an SSD in when prices fall a bit more!
