Hello lovely people of Home Cinema and Hi-Fi.

I've currently got a 32" Sony Bravia and it's been a good servant - but I've moved into a bigger room and it's too small now. I've got a budget of £1500 tops and have earmarked either the 46W5500 or 52W5500 as it's replacement.

The TV is for a bedroom, basically spaced at 13ft x 10ft wide. The TV and I would be at opposite ends of the room (13ft) and according to Sony's size guidelines, I am at the recommended distance for 'HD Ready viewing' (3m for a 52" or 1.8m for a 46"). 1080p viewing obviously decreases that with 1.8m for the 46" and 2.1m for the 52".

I use Sky HD, a Playstation 3 with Blu-Rays and a few DVDs too - so mostly HD viewing with some SD stuff now and again.

I had ordered a 46" before leaving the house this morning but went into the Sony Center for a look about and the 52" blew everything away - it even made the 46" sets (which are by no means small) look average. I canceled my order to have a bit of a think about things, as I don't want to be unhappy with what I get.

Now part of me thinks that 52" is a bit of a mad size for a bedroom and 46" is a good, logical choice. At the same time, I remember thinking that the 32" tv was massive when it arrived (late 2007) and now it looks relatively small, particularly in the electronics stores where I have to double-take any 32" tv as it looks too small.

As a result of my indecision, I would appreciate some suggestions on which I should get. Whilst I understand that a few people may suggest a Plasma at that size, I'm happy with LCD. :)

Thanks.

I have 46" in the bedroom and at 1080p it would benefit a lot from the extra size.

The downside is that freeview is marginal at best and would probably be a bit nasty if it was any bigger.

However, sounds like you will regret not going for the bigger one if you go for the 46", and if you've sky HD and plenty of blu-rays I'd go for it :)

Don't go less that 50 at 13ft, a 46 will very quickly look tiny. I went up to a 50 from a 42 when watching at about 9ft. Well worth it !

Next step up is a projector ! :D

Whenever in doubt, go bigger. You'll soon get used to the size and before you know it you'll want something bigger again :)

With Blu-ray and HD gaming, big screens are finally viable in the living room - and it's great :D

i went from a 24'' screen to a 55'' at 9ft away :D it takes some getting used to..... but i'll never go back to a small screen again

more like a 60 to 65''

Ive gone from a 42 - 52 before, and the 52 seemed massive in comparison, much much bigger than previously going from a 42-50, its true what women say, an extra 2 inches really does make all the difference.

a 55'' screen looks big in a shop, but when you see it at home for the first time, it looks enormous ......especially after 24''

i laughed my head off...and then i got a bit scared...``this is too big for me``

it took me about 2 weeks to get used to it, but when i see a 46'' screen now, i think; ``that screen is tiny``

:D

Thanks for all the help guys. I think my real problem is that I am just under 13ft away from the set whenever I am at my desk (which faces the tv). I was considering putting a small sofa in front of the desk which would be about 2m (6.5 ft) away from the TV.

I would only ever be watching HD stuff (likely 1080p Blu-Rays) on the sofa but obviously don't want that to be uncomfortable viewing.
