I thought the watch afficionados might appreciate this as well as those who like writing instruments.

I was in the market for a new pen to use at work. Many of my colleagues use a Mont Blanc, but I couldn't get on with one and didn't like the slightly bulbous shape most of the gent's pens were available in. I was also looking for something metallic looking and most of the Mont Blancs I'd seen were a sort of black gloss finish.

I happened to be in the Dunhill outlet store in Bicester and spotted this beauty which I think is lovely to look at, beautifully engineered and felt good writing with, so I had to have it.

It's a Dunhill Sidecar rollerball finished in Ruthenium, which is a metal similar to platinum but imparting a satin finish which doesn't tarnish or pick up fingerprints or scratches. Time will tell if it doesn't scratch, but so far the fingerpint resistant qualities seem to be valid.

Come on now, you know the only thing people are going to care about is the cost... :p

£125, which is about half the retail cost. I think it is an outgoing model so it was being sold off at discount. Seems like a lot, but considering how well made it is, and will last a lifetime, I'm happy.

You bought a pen for £125 and you're actually going to use it?

Why not? It has a five year warranty and regular servicing after that means it can be used every day without fear of anything going wrong. It would defeat the point of having it if I didn't.

A £125 rollerball?

It doesn't matter how well the body is engineered, it'll still feel like any other £2.50 rollerball from partners on the paper.

Sorry, but servicing? What? What can go wrong, it's a pen?

It gets an MOT after three years. ;)
