Jupiter hit by something, 19th July 2009

Just the mere thought that something that massive was travelling through our solar system frightens me. Look at the enormous dent it's put in Jupiter!

If you think that is scary size then just wait til you research into what else is out there floating around :p

In 2028 the asteroid 1997XF11 will come extremely close to earth, but miss, it is about 1.3 km and 2.8 km in diameter.

If something changed and it hit earth at an estimated 30,000 mph, it would create an explosion 10 million times that of the bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima.

Everything with 100 to 200 miles would be wiped out, and cause extensive damage in about a 1,000 mile radius.

The dust thrown up would block out the sun.

If it hit the sea, it would create tidal waves hundreds of feet high.

It would very likely wipe out life on earth.

That is something A MILE WIDE.

Apparently it's some sort of monolith and the Russians are planning on sending a manned spaceship using their newly developed Sakharov drive to check it out next year.

God bless Jupiter.

I think I'm right in saying that Jupiter's gravitational pull atracts around 70% of asteroids/comets that would otherwise head towards the inner solar system (potentially us in other words).

Our Solar system is thought to be surround by several million Comets called the Oort cloud, as we pass through the Galaxy some of these are thrown towards our system by the gravitational force of of other Stars, Jupiter does indeed save us from many of these, it can however speed them up and slingshot them in our direction. Its doubtful life would have had the chance to evolve on Earth without Jupiter though.

Succinctly put :) not to forget our local neighbour, the asteroid belt either :D
