Just the mere thought that something that massive was travelling through our solar system frightens me. Look at the enormous dent it's put in Jupiter!

I think I'm right in saying that Jupiter's gravitational pull atracts around 70% of asteroids/comets that would otherwise head towards the inner solar system (potentially us in other words).
Our Solar system is thought to be surround by several million Comets called the Oort cloud, as we pass through the Galaxy some of these are thrown towards our system by the gravitational force of of other Stars, Jupiter does indeed save us from many of these, it can however speed them up and slingshot them in our direction. Its doubtful life would have had the chance to evolve on Earth without Jupiter though.
not to forget our local neighbour, the asteroid belt either
