Why do people use Twitter?

I joined Twitter about a week ago to follow a friend (he asked me to) and I get random people following me. I think they maybe bots...

Twitter is great IMHO. I follow some of the bbc sports correspondents and get short microblog type updates on sporting events. That + updates from friends touring in oz. Very handy.
 
I haven't read all this thread but.

Your line "Why people use Twitter? What motivates people to use Twitter? Any ideas? It’s about news or comments?"

Stick it in google and you get loads of sites with the exact same sentience all made by the same username
