Tempted to try this tomorrow, I only have 1 wheel in need of a refurb, well maybe 2..

Did you use paint stripper? What will happen if i get nitromors on the tyre?

Thought as much, it burns enough when you get it on your skin:p

Thing is I can't just sand it down and spray over the top, the paint has cracks in it :/

I don't think its too obvious from the pictures, but my wheels were unpainted so no need for paint stripper. Just a good sand, paint prep wipes and halfords spray tins!

* Filler primer (not from halfords)
* Halfords Gloss Black (several light coats)
* Leave 24 hours
* Lightly sand with 1200 grit
* Laquer

Job's a good un.

That looks awesome, well done. Get some pics up of them on the car.

Wish my car was off theroad long enough to do this.

Had a go today on one of the wheels. Nothing to lose really, if it'd gone breasts up i'd have just got it professionally refurbed, fortunately it went ok.

oops at paint on tyre tread, should come off after a few hundred yards:p

excellent thread guys!

can these alloys be repainted?

Sure, pretty much any alloy wheel (ones you'd want to paint up anyway) can be painted so long as the surface is well prepared. There's tons of step by step guides out there and these can be applied to most surfaces that you want to throw some shiny paint onto such as PC cases etc.

The basic finish would be good for most people but some wet sand the laquer and use rubbing compound to bring it up to a smooth shiny gloss. That's the high risk part but not always necessary.

Only worry is the durability of the paint though. I really badly need to sort something out with mine as its paint is chipping off. Not sure whether to spray paint or powdercoat them.

there will be durability issues with 1k (single pack) paints from rattle cans.
powdercoat will be the best, and if done properly the wheels would be sand/bead/whatever blasted and then coated from there.

as for paints, quickest way to a powdercoat like finish would be a 2k highsolids paint. mix the paint with the hardener and spray it on, the hardener takes care of the 'drying' process for you and you're left with a very tough, glossy finish. you need a spraygun and compressor though!

@OP you did a canny job there!

Aha, yeah I knew I would need it shot blasting beforehand. Been quoted £50 for shot blasting and £50 for powder coating for 4 wheels. Not bad I thought!

I had to read that a couple of times.... I thought you meant £100 per wheel!

£100 for all four corners, blasted and powdercoated is not to be sniffed at. make sure they balance the wheels too though.

Lets not forget a good respirator if using 2k paints. You should be using one regardless of what type of paint but it's absolutely imperative with 2k.

Oh and you don't necessarily need a compressor+gun to use 2k any more, you can buy 2k in a can, press a button on the bottom to mix the 2 components. They tend to claim a longer pot life once activated than 'normal' 2k, probably owing to it being in a sealed can.

That don't include fitting tyres and balancing, but should be able to get a garage to do that £20 cash in hand.
