Looking at changing jobs and will be running my own car . For the first year looking at keeping costs down and running a 406 diesel .

Will be doing most of my own maintenance but will be doing decent mileage (1000 per week) so prfer one of the higher spec 406's . Must have air con . Also will probably be the estate although if the right saloon came up it would be ok .

Anyone have experience of runing one over a decent lenth of time and any common issues ?

Many thanks

If the diesel is a HDI then those engines are quite decent. My dad has an 04 Peugeot Partner with the 2.0 HDI and it's never had any problems whatsoever. Peugeot reflashed the ECU at one service too and he said it felt even nicer and faster to drive but seems to be returning better economy as a result.

As for the 406 itself I don't know much but I think they're the most solid Peugeot of recent times, esp if it's just to be a work horse.

Yes its gonna be a workhorse but needs to be semi decent to drive .

Had a 306 hdi before as a company car a few years ago and although only 90bhp it was a great car and had 0 engine issues even though i put 60k on it . Will probably be looking at the 110 though as a bigger car . The Rapier seems to be the spec i want but will just have to keep an eye on whats out there

I don't mean to sound like an uninformed hater of all things french, but my mates 406 has been nothing but trouble. His wife's Citroen is also problematic and I have owned a Citroen and would, never again. Does that help? ;)

I have a v6 coupe, and had a 406 saloon before that over 6 years, neither have ever let me down besides normal maintenance. The coupe eats miles for breakfast and sounds sublime :D

Still feeling the urge every now and then for a Taxi replica....

My dad had an estate for a couple of months must have gone in and out the garage at least twice also if I recall there is a common prolbem with the handbrake light staying on regardless.

Do you know why it went in for repair ? I think for my budget (about 2k) i cant think of a better car and not many decent Mk3 Mondys for that price as a Mondeo was my first thought .

406's are Crap & pieces of cheap monkey metal compared to the old 405. Very weak derv with even weaker electrics & fittings, Complete French Crap. Avoid.

I have a mate with a T reg example that he's owned for years and its never let him down to my knowledge.

They represent cheap & cheerful motoring IFyou get a good one.

My father had the 2.2 or 2.1 (can never remember the engine size) HDi Coupe, fully loaded with all the toys. Apart from the particle filter causing a bit of problems it was a sublime car, ate the miles, comfy, and surprisingly spacious, and returned great MPG. Plus it's stunning.

As for the basic 406, not much bad to report about it. It's just a toss up between 406 and Mondeo really in terms of looks - I'd choose the 406 personally.

utter work horses. i had one years back, it had 112k miles (which i thought was pretty high at the time) but the car was faultless

i once thought there was a rattle in the dashboard, turns out it was my key ring. the car ruled. i secretly love them
