Hi guys,

Mate is looking at trading in his BMW 330ci for an old but nice performance luxury.

I'm trying to get him to go for a W reg BMW M5.

Ideas?

I think he should get a BMW 745i from the 330ci money assuming he gets circa £10k for it.

Edit: Just read it needs to be 10 years old. Why?

Edit 2: Does the 8 series count as luxury? 840ci could be had! :D

The BMW 7-Series E65 is nowhere near as nice to ride in as the Mercedes S-Class, if he is set on an oldish luxury saloon then this is where the money should go. 2003 on S500 would be my preferred buy.

Not got much experience of XJ's, but Moeks seems impressed with his, could well be worth a look as well.

M5 would be stonkingly quick and a brilliant drivers car but is quite far off the mark if he is after a luxury saloon.

Sticking with the BM theme. I would have thought an M5 bought, looked after and then sold would probably lose less money than the 7 series. 7s just seem to freefall the moment a wheel rolls off the forecourt.

Doesnt it depends what he wants from a car? The M5 will cost biblical amounts of money to run but in return provided its a good one be one of the most complete and great sports saloons on the planet. An S Class will cost less to run but be a more prestigious luxury cruiser.

Paying M5 running costs when all you wanted is a luxury saloon is fairly pointless, you may as well have saved a packet and bought a 530i/540i Sport which look the same inside and out.

Generally if the M5 is the car for you, then you just.. know.
