Do games REALLY need more power atm?

Apples to oranges the pc has no set purpose.
Soundcard not needed- on board, monitor & speakers & are not needed if you plug it into a HDTV.

Besides the Blueray player everything else in the Ps3 is years behind & is stuck in the Gforce 7900 era that's why its now cheaper than it was.

The PC would come in at about £350-400 & would have more performance & possible uses.

The console fix featured hardware depreciates over the years where as the PCs hardware is always evolving.
If the only hardware available for the PC was the same as when the PS3 first come out the value of the parts would be peanuts.

OK Spec me something for gaming better than a PS3, 1920 x 1200 @ min 33 FPS.

I already did & that is the cost of most of my builds for others.
1440x900 - 1680x1050 is the most common res & both are higher than 720p & will do 1920x1080 far better than the PS3.

Sorry I know what you your saying and that didn't come across well.

I was looking at directly comparing the cost of both systems.

PC Gaming needs.

Monitor
CPU
RAM
Motherboard
GFX
PSU
Case
Hard Drive
ROM Drive
Sound Card
Key Board
Mouse
Speakers
Operating system

I have a choice of getting an Air Conditioning unit for $100 from a hardware store. Or I can opt to get a $20,000 Civic Honda with built-in Air Conditioning.

But, by getting a Civic I need to buy:
4 x tires
1 x engine
1 x chasis
1 x gear axle
1 x front window
1 x tachometre
1 x speedometre
4 x seatbelts
1 x Cup holder
2 x wind shield wiper

oh and:
3 years of Power Train Warranty.

I was just comparing the cost of both solutions.

Yeah I could just about live with that case under the TV I suppose.

£329.99 inc VAT Is a dam good price but after you add the blue ray drive, OS and keyboard/mouse its closer £500.

Its not going to great for gaming at 1920 x 1200 though. Maybe good for 1366 x 720.

Jiigger admit that you were wrong and stop spamming this thread. You can build a pc for £50 more than a ps3 that plays games at 1080p not 720p and 30fps.

The PS3 is only a cheaper gaming option because it does less. Running at 1280x720 with no AA and at 30fps isn't most people's idea of quality gaming. And you pay a LOT more for games, so it ends up being more expensive if you taking gaming at all seriously. And don't forget that more demanding games like GTA4 run at a lower resolution (640p) to maintain the framerate. However, I would say the X360 is a bargain for what it does, especially as it out performs the PS3 on most multi-platform games. Certainly you can't get a gaming PC for £135.

But this is getting off topic. At the end of the day there are games out there now that would benefit from better performing graphics cards (Crysis, STALKER) and monitors are fast coming down in price meaning that people will need more power to feed the higher resolutions. We may not have any graphics grinding games like Crysis due any time soon but I really don't think that's a bad thing.

i saw when crisis first came out tri 3 X 8800ultra's and it still could not perform great with settings on high, i mean what were they using when devoping there games.

considering a cheap pc will out perform a console and look a lot better the pc vs console debate is so 90's.

the pc is expanding as a gaming platform and grows in users year on end.

Yeah fair enough you can build a decent enough PC for not a lot of money and the high res performance of the 4850 seems to have come on in leaps and bounds.

£500 ish would get you a box for under the telly to match a PS3 for gaming and be a little more flexible, which is less than I was thinking but still quite bad.

You only need £425 And infinity more flexible & more powerful gaming wise, if you only wanted to match the PS3 gaming performance then you only need to buy A gfx card today that is equal to a Geforce 7900 & save £20-£30 from the £425.

When you buy pc parts your paying today prices for today's technology.
There is no subsidising no fixed hardware no economy of scale on the PC parts when bought because you can choose what you want.
When you buy the Ps3 your paying for standardised subsidised 2005 technology today that cost £300-£425 on launch, if it was not subsidised you would be looking at £550-£600 on launch, buy 2 games at £40-£50 each & a second controller £35.
