Crysis, 2 or 4GB, 800 or 1066

I'm itching to upgrade the memory in my sons PC. He plays Crysis often. At the minute he has 2GB of 800MHz ram in there.

Would I be better going for 4GB of 800Mhz, or 2GB of 1066Mhz.

I am currently using a divider on my intel e5200 system to get it to 3.1GHz.
 
In real life situations, you won't be able to notice the difference between 800MHz and 1066MHz memory. The only real reason to opt for 1066MHz type memory is if you have a processor that has a low multiplier, which the Intel E5200 doesn't, or if you're going for some ridiculously high overclocks.

You would be far better of with 4GB of 800MHz, without a shadow of a doubt.

I have wondered in the past whether I would take a performance hit in running 4GB with XP, but in another thread here, I'm being told it'll work as fast as having 2GB.

Will Crysis benefit from 4GB?
 
i havent run crysis on 2gb but i would have thought 4gb over 2gb you would see some improvement but it will also depend on the other specs of the pc. you can get 64bit xp so its just the version you are using.
 
Crysis can use 2G of RAM, the OS needs some too, so even though you may only see 3-3.5G of RAM on a 32bit system when you put 4G of RAM in, with even 3, you will have enough headroom for the OS and crysis simultaneously.

I'm thinking 4gb of 800mhz would be a good compromise/option. I have a DFI P35 Infinity Blood Iron; would the ocz gold series be ok for it. I know there is a 800mhz ddr2 version.

Does anyone know of some 2 and 4GB benchmarks in Crysis?

The thing is with Crysis, it will open up a can of whoop-ass on the whole system.

I completed Crysis & Warhead on High settings with the following spec:

AMD Athlon 4200+ X2 @ 2.8GHz
2GB RAM
ATi 4890

Now in some areas of the game I would get huge slowdowns and sometimes I would lag like sh!t, I also noticed using the in game FPS graphs that it was using up to 1.7GB ram sometimes.

Since upgrading to the spec in my sig I am playing through again on Very High DX10 which I add was VERY impractical on my old rig with the same graphics card. Apart from the odd FPS drop outdoors, the game is running brilliant in comparison and thus far have experienced no lag.

So in my opinion yes, an upgrade to 4GB will give an improvement (If you run with 64-bit, that is), to what extent I do not know because I upgraded my processor at the same time, but I know one thing, Crysis sure as hell isn't just GPU dependant.

two things to consider, with the price of memory so low atm, you may as well get at least 4gb 'cos summat in the future that you instal might use it, and if you change your mobo/cpu in the future, pc8500 (1066) speed memory will have the headroom to allow you to overclock the fsb above 400mhz (800mhz ddr) if you're able to do so.:)
 
Even with XP 32 bit, most systems with 4GB total memory will still be able to use 3GB of it. That's still 1GB more than 2GB, which will still yeild improvements. Therefore it will tied you over nicely until you get around to buying 64 bit Windows 7.
 
More memory definitely. I dont know about the PAE support of XP as i only use it on servers but maybe you could give it a try to see if it can address the whole 4GB? Its dependent on what graphics card you are using also if i remember correctly.
 
PAE is a bad choice, it doubles the effective memory latency. Also I don't think it's supported in desktop versions of windows (I might be wrong though). Also even with PAE enabled, a single 32bit process can only be allocated up to 2G of memory.

Physical address extension won't make a difference if you're using consumer based operating systems like Windows XP and Windows Vista since it's already enabled. Whilst the operating systems can technically address more than 4GB of RAM due to PAE, they won't be able to due to licensing restrictions. If people want to be able to use 4GB or more of RAM, the only sensible option is to migrate over to a 64-bit operating system.
 
True. I wouldnt recommend a 32-bit install nowadays anyway given the improved stability of 64 bit over recent years and the fall in price of DDR2/DDR3.

My son is loving it at the moment, and I'm using it as an excuse to put more/better memory in the system.

I had seen the PAE setting discussion before, and wondered if it slowed XP 32bit down.

I'll prolly just add the 4GB, and let XP see 3.5. I have 4GB in my Macbook Pro running XP, and it seems to be fine.
