i notice that when i add a cd too itunes it rips it appears to rip it at only 128kbps

how do i ripp at higher rates i am interesed in 320kbps and

also interested in apple lossless

it's for a 30gb ipod so i have plenty of room - the ipod is connected to high end amp and speakers hence wanting the higher bitrate

(Menu Bar) iTunes > Preferences > General Tab

Then just click on the "Import Settings..." button and away you go :)

apple lossless is pretty good, starting ripping some of my favourite music in the format. Can really notice the difference from VBR MP3 files.

I've ripped my whole library in Apple Lossless.

It's a good mix of quality, with a reasonable filesize (contemplated using raw WAV or AIFF). The AirPort Express also transcodes all files to Apple Lossless before broadcasting to a base station so I thought it would save on cycles if it was native.

That's me though :o...

Bit of a problem when I've got circa 800 CDs I was intending on ripping.. mmm

Reason why I'm looking into it is that I'm fed up with poor sounding mp3s on my IPOD 80GB gen 5 (interested what my iphone 3gs will be like)

I use the search feature ;)

Biggest problem for me will be hard drive space.. Time for another 2 drives. for the collection and one for the scheduled robocopy...

Was also wondering about one of these apple TV devices..

I've gone back and re ripped some of my older CD's at 320kbs now. I think the fact I have done it at 320 makes me happier, even though I don't hear a huge difference.

I haven't tried at Apple lossless though. Would the iPhone handle the lossless format?

I ripped my collection Lossless since everyone was banging on about it - turned a 5gb library into a 20gb one with that move. I couldn't really notice much difference (if any) so went back to 320kbps and all is well.

I wasn't aware of this, I've been copying the AIFF files straight off the discs (just to be a purist) but that's given me food-for-thought.

What I wish Apple would do is add "Masters" (or whatever) in the Library sidebar where you can rip as Apple Lossless (or download from the iTunes Store!) but you could then convert to MP3/AAC for your iPod. This with options of which version to sync to your iPod, which to show in your normal library etc.

As it is I still only ever rip at 320Kbps CBR MP3. IMO it's the best compromise between quality, filesize and also importantly compatibility - everything plays an MP3 :p

Don't get me wrong, AAC is technologically a better format (especially at lower bitrates), has less issues with the licensing (for example if you sell music in AAC you don't have to pay royalties to anyone but with MP3 you do - not that it makes the iTunes Store cheaper than No Competitors MP3  ) and it has pretty much gained the support of any new music playing device out there. It's just that with MP3 it will ALWAYS play ;)

Either that or I just don't want to re-rip my CDs into AAC :p

I recently did some comparison listening tests as all my MP3s I'd ripped were ripped a long time ago at 128. Since those tests, I've re-ripped every CD I own in lossless AAC! It took a while and at that point I decided to buy a new iPod Classic as the iPod Touch just wasn't big enough any more.

With HDD-based players increasing file size decreases battery life as the HDD must spin up and fill the cache more often. In case you didn't know :)

It's not really an issue to me, the stated battery life on the Classic is 36 hours but I pretty much use it exclusively in the car where it's in a charging cradle.

It must be me. I have all my music ripped@128kb and it sounds fantastic on my iPhone with a pair of Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 EB ear phones.

But I'm no audiophile and most likely tone deaf anyway.:o:D
