Uneven new Mercs and Bimmers!

I like this quote from that article
BMW 'is developing cars to suit the quirky noise, vibration and harshness characteristics of three-pot engines.'

so are they going to buy Rover again? :)

Merc have the Smart already, maybe BMW will look to buy a car company to make small rubbish cars, they could buy VX or Opel:p

You've got to be ****ting me, ****ing EU environmental crap, I'm going to hate the green brigade even more now.
I wouldn't be surprised if we see something Aygo/C1/107 size from BMW and Mercedes over the coming years.
That class of cars should be banned from the roads .

I dont see what the fuss is about to be honest, regardless of whatever car you have the roads are so damn full you'd have nowhere to make use of a supercar, etc.

Because they scream poverty imo, look at the US, now that's a nice fleet of big cars, they all scream: We can afford to run these beasts, 107's etc scream, we can't afford tax and petrol .

they are a functional tool. those that are less image-obsessed than yourself can see that they are the ideal car for a city centre, plenty of places to park them and they sip fuel. so far, you have no more cohesive argument than "i dont like them because THEY ARE FOR POOR PEOPLE"

Most of the big cars in the US are rubbish.

You've just answered it yourself now, ''ideal'' for a city but what about outside of cities ? What if I wanted to comfortably cruise to Austria on a holiday in it? A car that is just good in cities is rubbish imo. A car must be good all around.

What other reasons are there to buy one?
Costs: Partly the fault of insurance company's and the government.

I can't see why you don't want more space, more comfort, and more speed...

a pagani zonda is rubbish in cities, as proven by top gear, therefore it MUST BE BANNED AT ONCE!

your argument is weak. have the summer holidays started or something?

edit: and while we're onto it, i cant get a wardrobe in my focus. BAN.

Ok perhaps not banning, bit I simply dislike em and hate the image of the cars.

No need to be an arse, what have school holidays got to do with my post? I haven't been to school anywhere in 2009 yet...

What is that supposed to say? I mean, I'm still against the development of such cars. Can't see any good reason why he picked an IQ.

I think it's great that they're going to be scaling down the engines while keeping the same performance levels. Then they can scale that performance into the larger engines and they should go even faster :D

That would mean going FI which I wouldn't expect from them really. At least it's nice to see tradition being broken, but I feel small cars have a place alongside bigger cars. Granted, in my usual driving places you don't see many of these city bricks on wheels so its not going to bother me getting stuck behind a 3 pot wasing machine.

Im dreading the day when my son tells me he cant wait untill her grows up and can buy a 3 cylinder 1.2 BMW M3!

Having never driven one, what are these new small turbo engines like the 1.4 tfsi like? I imagin they need ragging to the red line to go anywhere, especially if they end up in the C Class!

BMW have already launching a twin turbo 4.4l V8 in the bmw x5, and there are more and more turbo enignes being launched from them!
