Hey,

Was looking at a bit later this year in upgrading my PC, just the base parts; motherboard, processor and RAM from my Q6600-based setup to an i7 920 setup! :D

Decided on these:

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail
£205.99

Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
£203.99

Patriot Viper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600MHz) Low Latency Tri-Channel (PVT36G1600LLK)
£75.99

Total: £485.97

Unless you guys can recommend anything better ^^ ? :)

Now cooling-wise, I want a good cooler for the 920 of course.. I was looking and thought the Xigmatek Thor's Hammer looked a good cooler (well, heatsink cooler?!) and I'm sure you can fit a 120mm fan on it - correct? Was just wondering if this heatsink is the right choice? If so, what would be the best 120mm fan for it?

Cheers!

Lots of people recommend the Noctua 120mm Vortex fans, they are quite pricey, but they are supposed to be really good, and quiet to...

I personally don't like the color scheme, but that's just my opinion...

Scythe S-Flex fans are meant to be quite good also...

If you aren't looking to spend that much on a fan then I would suggest one of these, at £6.89 you can't complain, and I am sure it would get the job done quite nicely...

Haha, someone who shares the exact sentiments as myself. I know a lot of people and a few friends I personally know all recommend that Noctua fan, but I just hatehatehate the ugly beige colour scheme it has going, it's awful.. could have made a popular fan at least a nice premium colour like black or something.. Hmph! That is the reason I won't ever buy one. :p

The Scythe S-FLEX and Xilence Red Wing fans you referred too though; despite the Scythe being £12.64, it outputs 63.7 CFM of air flow at 28 dBa.. However the Red Wing priced at £6.89 outputs 68 CFM of air flow at 21.2 dBa.. Or am I missing something blindingly obvious here?

its a typing mistake the red wing outputs max 44cfm,

i too dont like the colour scheme on the noctua, but the Xigmatek series have some great looking fans with high cfm too (62cfm)

Would that be the Xigmatek XLF-F1253? :)

cfm mean nothing without a static pressure reading
db mean nothing without a distance between source and detector

So essentially the specifications quoted are best ignored, go with people who have tested them instead. Scythe s-flex will do you proud, Ive got around a dozen of the 1600rpm ones.

I'm going to use UD5, 920 and corsair dominator when/if I move to i7, with a TRUE as well. This is only because the dominator is easily watercooled however.

Nice spec :)

Someone posted on these forums a while ago stating that the color of the Noctuas are the same color as the plastic used for making prosthetic limbs!!! :D

That being said though, they are supposed to be excellent performing fans, and really quiet to...

I just bought one of these fans from the Members Market for £6, I will be strapping it to my TRUE once I get the LGA1366 Bolt Thru Kit... I saw a picture of this fan fitted to a TRUE on here yesterday and thought that it looked really cool...

Does it only fit 1x 120mm fan? I know a few heatsinks have 2x 120mm fans attached either side, both exhausting hot air through the heatsink and enabling it to escape quicker through the rear case exhaust fans?
