First of all, apologies to the mods if this is in the wrong section. Couldnt decide if it belonged to Consoles or Hard Drive sections.

I currently play video files from an 8GB memory stick inserted into the USB slot of my PS3. Due to the size of some of the 1080P/720P files I was going to purchase a 32GB memory stick. The prices are still very high however.

If I were to buy an external USB hard drive, which would be much more cost efficient per GB, would that still function the same? Hell - I could buy a 1TB drive and have all of my movie collection in digital format available through my PS3!

this should probs be in consoles, but to answer your question yes, you should be able to use a USB hdd ont he ps3 :)

not sure if you need to have it formatted in a certain file system though?

A USB HDD will be fine, I use a WD Passport with mine. Will need to be FAT32 though, although I've heard HFS also works. Bear in mind FAT32 has a 4GB limit on filesizes.

Thanks chaps. I know its limited to FAT32 and a 4GB size limit, I just break down the HD movies into split files.

You realise you can use media sharing on your PC to share all the videos and music on your computer's hard drive wireless to the PS3? :o

Yeah thanks mate, never tried it mind. I just dont like the idea of leaving my PC turned on when I can just have the media file locally on a stick.

wireless wouldnt work with HD files anyway. I had to invest in 200mbps powerline, and tbh that doesnt really cope either, but is useable.

I never had any problems streaming 1080p via my 100mbps ethernet connection, as long as the file was supported natively, but if there was transcoding involved then I could just about get away with 720p.

I think it would need to be changed to FAT as my 80 gig usb external hard disk wasnt picked up on the PS when it was NTFS, had to use partition magic as windows couldnt change the drive that big from NTFS to FAT32.

I even streamed 1080p stuff (20mbps or so) wireless without stuttering, but my PS3 is only 4 metres from the router so the connection is 95%

It is also possible to transfer (video) files from the PC to the PS3 using the network and doing it that way it is possible to have files >4GB

You can easily stream a 1080p file over standard wireless perfectly. The majority of the files you will generally be viewing are in the region of 10-15 Mbps, easily low enough for even crappy wireless to cope.

Hell even a 16 GB beast is only ~24 Mbps which is also low enough for a decent wireless network to cope with.

well speaking from (my) experience i have not been able to succesfully stream over 54g wireless. Modified loads of settings, but just nothing smooth (only use 1080p media, DTS sound). The addition of a powerline adapters (with a real throughpput of 20mbps as opposed to quoted 200) meant i can do it, but it still struggles on very intensive streams. Perhaps something up with my PC/PS3, but its a [email protected] with 8GB RAM and a early 60GB PS3 - but it works fine over CAT5 so i dont think so...

just my 2p, haaving spent 3 months on it. Your mileage may vary.

EDIT: Should add the files i am using fo 1080p are around 16GB - see no point going lower tbh as you lose quality with compression, and negate the benefits of 1080p.

That is so bone idle I barely even know what to say.

Surely its more effort ripping every single DVD/Bluray you have than it is to just pick them up off the shelf every once in a while? Plus you now have the extra bother of having to go out and buy a new HDD. Plus the bother of actually having to waste energy thinking about which one to get and typing about it on a forum!

The Knock Off Nigel song is playing in my head right now :p

/sarcasm.

Can you not appreciate the joy of having your full movie/music library on tap from a remote control without even getting up from your couch? Thats where the future is...

Lolz, if I had a PS3 with blueray, it's about the last thing I would do is rip 25/50GB bluerays and put them on a HDD!

Pointless IMO, but each to his own.
