Unimpressive Royal Naval gunnery?

lol you'd thing some explosive charge would do better... but then again you don't get the experience.

anyway, not sure whats wrong with the shooting ... was fairly small, distant, and moving rather a lot, and a few good hits.

I have had a great idea to rescue our country's economy! : get an old RN ship, put loads of guns on it, and make people pay to shoot stuff! (how about we buy prisoners from death row in america :) )

Do we train our naval gunners these days or was that one of the TV crew having a shot at it?

don't see a lot wrong with it - my experience comes from the army rather than navy but all the same - machine guns have 'beaten zones' where the rounds fall - basically they are area weapons - if you clamped a machine gun into a perfect vice and fired two rounds at a post they would land in different places - do the same thing with a rifle and they'd basically land in the same place - further away the target is the larger the beaten zone - so no you wouldn't expect to see a neat row of splashes where the rounds come out of the boat - you'd expect to see lots of rounds bouncing up around the boat seemingly at random in an area surrounding the boat - which is more or less what you do see in the video.

Oh I dunno... when I got to work with some guys from 1st para things were going boom and exploding into a million pieces when they got shot...

you must be old then

1st para was a brigade that existed in WW2

think you might be referring to 1 PARA

i would guess that the boat was killed very quickly after the first few shots but just letting it sink slowly due to a below waterline hole wouldn't have been much fun.

personally i think they should have opened up with all guns just for the giggles.

Semantics.

Full title is 1st Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (1 PARA). So, 1st para isn't inaccurate - just not offical. And everyone would know what he meant.

That wasn't just for show.. they sink every drug boat they find. They are at sea. They cannot just park it and wait for a tow truck to pick it up. They don't have limitless room on board, nor is it safe to tow.

They always reffered to themselves as "first" para /shrugs.

Only worked with them anyhow wasn't in 1 PARA.

Wiki said:
In 1967 Hathcock set the record for the 20th century's longest combat kill with a Browning M2 .50 BMG machine gun mounting a telescopic sight. The distance was 2,286 meters (2,500 yd / 1.420 mi). Hathcock was one of several individuals to utilize the Browning M2 machine gun in the sniping role.

Machine guns inaccurate eh?

I don't see the point in shooting it to smithereens. They arrested the men and seized the drugs, so why not just leave it adrift?

First thought was did they really need to sink it? Some more fuel floating in the sea and a load more metal at the bottom...really necessary?

Because it is a danger to other boats traveling, it could be taken and used again by other pirates / smugglers... just two obvious reasons.

Yeah, but what if a poor old villiage woman in a rowing boat found it? She would be pretty damn happy with a speedboat upgrade.
