just got my 920-d0

My friends going to be getting an i7 build soon so decided to sell him my 920 since he wont be oc'ing, so i got me a i7 920 d0 chip.

everything seems fine, but i have 2 quick questions;

when i first booted up with my d0 chip it came up with 'run bios update' but i managed to get passed that. currently my bios is up to date, so im not sure what to do

second is do these temps look ok? i ran intel burn test with everything a stock and it came up in its 60's, that normal?

Only thing I would ask is did u underclock the cpu or something as its saying 1600 MHz on CPUz there? It should be 2660 I would have thought? I could be wrong though as I haven't used an i7 yet.

nope, the core speed is determined by the computer, forgot to turn that off

Well then from reading around I think people are getting around 80c when using their cpu, so up your core speed to the stock level and then see what you get.

Speedstep is on so it will return to stock when under load anyway :confused:

Yeah that speed and those temps (assuming they're idle) are fine. Not sure about the BIOS message though. :s

So if he turns that off and then does the burn test etc with it at 2.66MHz then he will see what temps he will get when loading the cpu.

hmmm, those temps seem a little high to me..

You are using the Noctua right?

I have an old Zalman 9700NT cooling my D0 i920, and my idle temps are 39c and that is with my chip o/ced to 4GHz and Speedstep disabled and 1.264v Vcore, my load temps are around 85c on the hottest core...

I would have thought with Speedstep turned on your temps should be a lot lower, especially with the Noctua HSF...

just updated my bios, which fixed the bios message

there was an option in the Asus bios to turn of speedstep, which i did and now my temps are around 40s

EDIT: thinking maybe i put a bit too much of thermal paste?

Don't turn off speedstep, there is no benefit to turning it off, you will go up to 20, and 21 if you've left turbo enabled under load anyway.

Slap a 10 and then 20 OC on the processor, the noctua deals with OC amazingly well. Sittign testign stocks temps when you plan to OC might not make for the best test. Start small and check your voltages.

With a p6tdeluxe v2, noctua and stock voltages under a 20% OC (3.2) I sit 43/44 idle, and 70odd in IBT 16 threads and maximum ram usage, probably get it up to 73 with longterm full burn, been a while can't recall.

When i next fiddle around I'll be dropping voltages from stock, as thats why my temps are as high as they are.

well ive clocked it to 3ghz atm with xmp, temps at 70s, ill go back and check the voltages again to try and get them lower

yup, from here
though i cant find it on the box, but on cpu-z is says 5 if thast any help

EDIT: d0 stepping, dunno where the 5 came from.

I just tried running 20 passes of LinX with my rig, and with the CPU running @ 4GHz the hottest core hit 84c...

What do you have your Vcore set to in your BIOS for 3GHz o/c?

My D0 i920 can do 3GHz with 1.18v... It would probably go lower, I haven't really experimented tbh...

got kinda confused there

right now im running intel burn test, at 3.5 with vcore at 1.3v and im getting 75's, though im not sure how low i can go, im used to setting voltages high
though after the burn test, ill probably set the voltages a bit down

I should think you could drop the voltages down quite a bit more than 1.3v mate.. what is your QPI/Vtt voltage set to?

i'm overclocked to just under 3.2ghz and my idle temps are around 40-44.

keep the volts lowish
you should need around 1.275 for 4ghz

right now im using for 3.7;
CPU: 1.275
CPU PLL: 1.80
DRAM: 1.25

with my C0 chip i could get passed 3.7 so ill try for that + higher tomorrow probably

cant get stable on 3.8 for some reason

using the same settings as above, intel burn test stops around half way through saying its unstable
