Right basically I developed a leak from the power steering and it got so bad that I decided something needed to be done. So I went to Kwik Fit so they could take a look on the ramp. Big mistake.

They said that the leak was coming from the gaiter and said it will have been a seal in the rack it's self. I manage to get a good rack for not too much and take it to my mechanic today. He takes the rack off and says it's the hose coupling that was causing the leak.. grrr!

Renault do this part for... wait for it £180:eek: For about 1m of hydraulic hose! No way in hell am I paying that for a hose, but I've been told there are some other options.

a) Get one made up at a hydraulics place

or b) possibly get it repaired. Although I can't see how that would work. So has anyone got any experience with this stuff. I can't imagine a custom made pipe should be too much for 1 metre.

cheers

I would personally not go for a repair....hydraulics main purpose is to work under pressure so you really dont want to rely on a fix. Have a look on ebay or get one from a scrappy.

Ask at somewhere like pirtek if you go in they make them on the spot (assuming they have the connections) in a bout 10mins. Just ask for a quote first.

sure it's not the o-ring seal? I've had a couple go

if you need a new pipe, measure the old one's dimensions and give this guy a buzz:

he operates through ebay too iirc. I've had a few custom hoses off him now :)

:edit: or yeh, pirtek are good too if you have a local one

Hmm, they've moved! They used to be up the road in Desford.

Can vouch for their work, very good and reasonably priced.

Thanks

I have a Pirtek that's not too far away from me but will try a few others. Why do they need the ends? Do they re use them or is it just to get the correct fitting?

Hyphose / Pirtek etc, they will need the old ends so they can match them, no hydraulic company is happy to re-use old ends and in fact a lot of them refuse to do it and the ones that do will not guarantee the assembly (sometimes with older US stuff and some peculiar Chinese fittings you have to do it in my line of work, just to get the customer out of a spot).
Get a quote from a few suppliers once the first one has told you what it actually is, it's probably a Parker equivalent hose with either BSP or Metric fittings, price you are looking at shouldn't get north of £30.

If the fittings are fixed swages be sure to wind them in both ends at the same time (think about it) and a little silicon tape doesn't hurt even if the are tapered threads.

Impressed with the knowledge on here :p Around £30 would be good news right now! Yeah I was thinking about the fitting and it sounds tricky. The mechanic was more worried about the routing though as he thinks it will be difficult with an un-shaped aftermarket pipe.

Get a new one made up dude, or take the old one and see if they can repair it by sticking a new end on :)

(our local bloke will stick new ends old hose, v.few places will do this)
