My best mate was all set to ***** up 19k for a used R32 golf with 30,000 miles thats on an 07 plate.

Ive managed to talk him out of it, pointing out thats an awfull lot for a golf, especially when you can get very nice used e90 3 series for this money.

Think you could even get a 335 saloon for this money too ?

Doesnt have to spend 20k, but the real reason he liked the R32 was the DSG box

Can we come up with anything better for under 20k with DSG that isnt as epic fail as 19k on a golf ?

You can pick up a A3 3.2 DSG for 10-11k now I think, give or take a R32 with slightly softer suspension. If you shop about you can also get a R32 DSG for under 15k, 19k is a rip off considering they were selling them brand new for 17k a few months ago.

ive not got pistonheads or autotrader at work so was wondering if you could get used A4s with DSG for this sort of money yet ?

You won't get a new one but he might find a decent, sub 30k S4 with DSG for this money...

Edit: Give you an idea - http://pistonheads.com/sales/1139884.htm - very nice car, just not a DSG

Also

http://pistonheads.com/sales/1152200.htm - Tiptronic, higher miles tho
http://pistonheads.com/sales/1133245.htm - rocket ship miles but for £15k it's a whole lot of car

finding a 335i for under £20k is going to be impossible as everybody buys a 335d.

is a 330i fast enough?

There are many better ways of moving your family around than in a plastic Subaru, many of which are demonstrated in this thread.

Should not be that hard unless the prices have gone up, my I paid 20 500 for my girlfriends 335i and my dad paid 17.5k for his.

cool

was hoping you could get a 335i saloon for under 20k.

I know saloons dont command the premiums that coupes do, so was hoping it might slip under the 20k mark.

It doesnt have to have DSG btw, he went and test drove the R32 and thought of it exactly what i thought he would - power delivery too linear, no real feeling of speed, and feels no different to a golf. And considering what else 20k gets you, getting a golf just seems daft.

So he's definately gone off the idea and looking around and not bothered about DSG.

Any other ideas ?

and that S4 convertible is a no. Needs to have a decent sized boot. And im pretty sure even a golf has a bigger boot than an a4 cabriolet boot full of roof gubbins.

Audi A3 Sportback is easily do-able with a decent spec and decent kit too. 3.2 DSG

I would do this.

I personally think DSG is excellent and I probably wouldn't buy another family sized VAG car without it or its current equivalent, though some may think I am heavily biased at this point.

isnt the 3.2 DSG going to feel exactly the same as the R32 though

same engine, gearbox and shared platform isnt it ?

What are his priorities in terms of age, mileage, running costs etc.

£19k buuys a lot of car. If it were me for example, I'd be looking at bigger cars than a golf. I'd be looking at an S class Merc, or perhaps an E55 or Jag XJR if speed were important, however it would be older and have much higher maintenance costs.

B5 RS4.

It might not be DSG, or anywhere near the age of other choices, but hey, he will be the ultimate Daddy Cool :D
