Well hello there party people :P

Just about to get me a i7 920, have a QX6950 at the moment, and was going to go for an extreme again, but it seemed like a waste seeing as people are getting these 920's to 4ghz .... so why pay £800 when i can save the pennys and get the same sorta speed?

Anyways

What cooler should i be looking at?

I have a thermaltake 120 Extreme at the moment, and it does the job nicely but this is over 2 years old now and was wondering if there was a new kid on the block?

Many thanks

TBH with an LGA1366 retention clip, the TRUE is still a contender. I'd stick with it, if it turns out the temps are to high, then consider a new cooler.

Stick with the TRUE, you will need the 1366 hold down kit. Strap a second fan to it if you have room.

Mine provides enough cooling for 4.2Ghz.

Im going to try a Zalman Extreme I think, always been impressed with Zalman, will see what I get with 4.0ghz...

and pay double the price of an Akasa Nero? If you have some spare cash like that, please send some to me.:D

I see it does have a good write up! I would be interested on how you get on with it, especially after seeing that it needs to be part installed before fitting the motherboard to the case. So as an after market fan, it needs more work than just a standard swap out that some others are capable of. See the following link for a description and diagram.

@ OP, I would also recommend that you just buy the LGA1366 Bolt Thru Kit and continue using your TRUE 120 Extreme...

It is a great HSF... and it means you won't need to go out and buy another new HSF, just the mounting kit..

cool, we'll the problem is im selling my old parts which will include the cooler.

I was just wondering whether the TRUE is still the daddy :P

Also I'm currently on a QX6850 chip which goes to about 3.6 before it starts to cry.

Im moving the othe 920, is this a good step?

Mainly the move was down to me getting annoyed with hard drive vanisheing randomly because the mobo decided they wer'nt there n e more and becuase i want to do a fresh install of win 7 ... so what better way to welcome new windows than with a new load of goodies (and i wanted some parcels to open)

at the moment i have waiting for the case:

Asus P6T6 WS Revolution board
gotta order 12GB Ram (havent chosen this yet)
2x 15k rpm 146gb SAS drives
GFX cards (not sure yet)
cpu (not sure but almost def the 920)
Cooler (:P)

So was it awise move to move from the QX6850? ive got a griend with a 920 and hes running it at 3.8 on a stock cooller ...

I've had my QX upto 4ghz but it really doesnt like it.

Right so umm life story over, back to coolers ....

So at the moment the 2 im looking at are the Neo, and the TRUE

Any reason for 12GB, it will prove more difficult for a stable OC with 12GB, althought I manage just fine at low levels. If you are going for a pure OC might be best to stick to 6GB. My advice on the RAM especially with an asus board is to get the up to date QVL and decide from that which RAM you'll go for.

I don't know why no one has mentioned the Prolimatech Megahalems or the Thermalright IFX-14, both are excellent coolers with the latter taking the crown. They pretty much blow anything else out of the water, including the TRUE. Only downside is the price.

Wow the IFX-14 looks likea nice one and its a bit cooler than the 120 :O hook that up with a delta ;) and im ready to rumble :P

Yeah it works pretty well with two fans, google "Prolimatech Megahalems and 12 Other Coolers for Intel Core i7 Overclocking" for a good i7 group test where it came out on top.

Shame OcUK don't stock the IFX-14, although I have mentioned it in the product suggestion section. It can be had for £40 if you search around.

do you think the IFX-14 would fit in a lian-li X2000 ok? and does it take a 140mm fan :| there were talking about it on a review and mentioned a 140mm fan :O

The Lian Li X2000 is a very big case so I don't see why not. Measure from the motherboard to the side panel to check.

Dimension : L146.2 x W124 x H161 mm (heatsink only). If a TRUE fits, I can't see height wise why this wouldn't, a true is H160.5 mm.

As for the fans, the surface area of a IFX-14 is 120mm x 140mm. So it's only really wider than a TRUE, not taller. It therefore accepts both 120mm and 140mm fans.
