Hi

I have just bought a new head unit, a Pioneer DEH-5000UB.

I want to upgrade my speakers in my car.

Are 6x9 speakers regarded as the best generally and why? What makes them different to circular?

I have a budget of around £150-£200 what would you guys recommend

MG ZS Saloon is the car.

They'll make lots of noise at the expense of quality. And the sound will come from behind you. Upgrade the speakers in the doors/dashboard with some nice components if you want an improvement in quality

My car has AFAIK 5/6 inch speakers in the doors, and small tweeter style speakers in the top of the door, by the wing mirrors.
And 2 8inch parcel shelf speakers at the rear.

Depends solely on your budget, 6x9s are pap, i'm running them as I have no real alternative but A sub and good speakers all around will be the best setup.

In my 400 I just put a subwoofer in the boot and turned the bass to the front speakers down - they are more than adequate quality wise, just cannot deal with bass.

As long as you have the 2 way set up that is - the tweeters are located in the corner of the front window.

Get a decent head unit, small sub in the boot, and cut the bass to the fronts. Worked a treat :)

6 x 9's are poor, avoid. I recommend front components as an upgrade, along with disconnecting the rears. :)

Why disconnect the rears?

I understand on a technical point of view, as they will most likely be connected up to a HU that has a crappy 5% THD and of course the speakers will be of poor quality... But in contrast on my Focus the front mids are right down by my knees so it sounds weird with no backs to fill in the sound. I have the rears turned right down though.

infinity's are the way to go,

oh dear lord! In 1999 maybe. Far better speakers for your budget than Infinitys

Oh, and set the rears up for rear fill rather than leaving them as they are or disconnecting. Much better sound stage that way

I never understood 6x9's, what other speakers do you see that are oval? The only other speakers that arn't circular are those Kicker Subs, can't say i'm sold on that idea either!

Components are the way forward, I have some Focal F1's in my 306, and its a big difference when you're in someone else's car with standard or uprated co-axials.

Also depends how long you will keep the car time vs effort/cost wise.

Got a pair of Rockford Fosgate Power speakers in the front of the ZR, a Magnat 12" sub, and a Jackson 1500W 5 channel amp.

All for £500 including fitting :)
