Filters - Before i hit the "buy" button

Raikiri

Thanks.

So its just 6 turns of the shutter speed wheel with a 6 stop ND
10 turns with a 10 stop ND

So compose the scene, then attach ND, add 6 stops to the shutter speed (if using 6 stop ND)

Can you get filters adapters?

So i can use a 77mm filter on a 55mm lens aswell?
Or do i need to buy seperate 55mm filters?
That would be costly!

I suppose you could shoot with the horizon central, then crop the hell out of it :)

Yes, you can get adapter rings. They're called "Step Up" and "Step Down" rings.

This works fine, with the obvious problem a big filter on a small lens will mean the hood wont fit - this may make the lens prone to flare.

B+W ND110 and B+W CPL arrived today :)
Whats the best way to keep these clean? Can you run them under a tap?
They cost a fair bit so i want to look after them

Heres a question for you guys.
If i wanted to use the ND110 and the CPL together how would i go about it?

I ask because the CPL attaches to the ND110 and thus bes on the outside.

How do i in this situation adjust the polorisation as i wount be able to see a thing through the viewfinder....?

Hmmm bit of a problem guys. With the lens hood on the Sigma 10/20mm i am unable to operate the CPL....

So what am i to do? Use it without the lens hood?

Guys, Am i doing this right?

Experimenting with the ND110 at home.

Without the ND camera was saying that 1/6 seconds was correct for f/11 in Aperture Priority mode.
So I switched from AF to MF and changed to Manual mode. Attached the ND and moved the shutter speed 10 stops to 6 seconds (1/6 > 1/4 > 1/3 > 0.5 > 0.7 > 1 > 1.5 > 2 > 3 > 4 > 6) but the pics are coming out too dark!

What am i doing wrong?

You seem to be using half stops ie. 1/6 to 1/3 is a full stop.

Yup. Just remember that each time you go up a stop you are doubling the amount of light entering the lens. So with a 10-stop filter you need to double the shutter speed 10 times (but not 10x the original shutter speed!).

Thanks. So the easy way to remember it out on the field is turn the shutter wheel 20x with the ND filter attached (as 1 turn of the shutter wheel is 0.5 stops on the camera)

Yep, or you could probably change your settings to use full stops if you wanted to. On my 450d I can chose 1/3, 1/2 or full stops in the settings.
