XXX XFX Radeon 4890 - Problems

Hello, I noticed the Radeon 4890 has two types of auxiliary power connections on the back of it, I was wondering if anyone can tell me if i need to use the 6pin, the 8pin or both.

The instructions in the manual isnt very clear, it just states in some cases you may need to use them both with no real detail stating which or why?

Can anyone shed a bit of light on this for me as im waiting to turn this baby on and start playing, but not before knowing what's what..

MY OCZ PSU has both a 6PIN & 8PIN

Anyone?

Another issue Grrrrrrrrr!!

Ok i've installed my card downloaded the windows 7 64 bit drivers installed it, and ive got another couple of issues.

Firstly, I've now got a black border around the edge of the desktop view even though I have the screen resolution set correctly.

and also

The picture quality seems more like vga than hdmi, the font and that dont look that great compaired with the Nvidia card that I just took out a couple of hours ago.

Any Ideas ANYONE?

ATI software isnt anywhere near as good as Nvidia ...boohoo!

Hiya spidey.. yeah mate i tried that... that was the first thing i did, but seriously dude the ATI control panel is naff... I cant see that adjust to monitor scaling or graphics card scaling like you would normally get in the basic nvidia software..

...Anywayzzz the scaling i could probably live with but the image quality is crap in windows... I haven't tried any games yet though...

When i look at the text in windows 7 with the default 1080p resolution on my screen i feel like im looking at a display with tired eyes... and the black border issue isnt even really black it looks fairly grey.

When i put my nvidia card back in its back to normal and perfect...

Click the 'Graphics' drop down list
Desktops & Displays
Then click the little down arrow on the monitor of choice, the smaller ones at the bottom.
Configure...
Scaling Options.

Normally have to set it to 0% Overscan.

chaosophy

Well i be damned ... It worked...lol Woohoo.. chaosophy i luv ya man.. (not like man on man luv), more like RESPECT!!! ( In a jamaican accent)..

Well its nice to see more settings for my HDTV etc... They could have made this a whole lot easier just by auto detecting the optimal settings like Nvidia does.

Anyways...much appreciated, i'm going to have a little play around tweaking the graphics for my LCD then fling on Rfactor..

Thanks again mate :)

np, glad to help. I've been using ATi cards forever and have both a DVI monitor and a HDMI TV connected, as well as having used vga/svhs/component connections in the past, so have got pretty good at finding the options for them. lol. :D

but I still have seriously no idea what ATi are thinking with this latest CCC redesign.

I'll get used to it I guess and luckily once you've set the options they should stick but why things like that 'configure...' option are hidden where they are I'll never know.

I've just stumbled on this problem myself, having spent well over £1200 on new parts for a new build this week I'm abit gutted to find that my OCZ modstream 700w psu simply doesn't have the connections for a 4890 crossfire setup.:mad:

It has 4 black 6 pin outputs for sata and basic 4 pin molex. Then it has 2 red connectors for 1 8pin pci-e and 1 6 pin pci-e = no 4890 crossfire support as far as I can make out.

The XFX manual is very specific that you cannot plug 6 pin connections into 8 pin and that molex to 6pin connectors are not supported on this card (even though they give you one in the bundle!) it also says you cannot use two 6 pin to one 8 pin connections.

It does say on the overclockers page "can power both NVIDIA® SLI™ and ATI CrossFire™ modes", which isn't true for the new 4890 cards.

Anyway. Looks like this PSU is no good for my setup. Do you think I'll have to buy a new one outright or will overclockers take this one back when the new one arrives?

LMAO :)

plug in the 8 pin and start your system up to be welcomed by a black screen with WARNING RED LETTERS stateing power.

Plug in the 6 pin and be greeted to the same screen

plug in both and presto ;)
