Bathroom stink

OK, I've read threads on here where members have come up with solutions to household woes so hopefully you can help me get to the bottom of this.

When I've had a bath and am letting the water out there is a foul, foul stench that comes from the drains. I assume it's pungent air coming back up through the bath overflow.

A couple of years ago we removed the pipe from behind the sink, where the water goes from the plughole and the inside absolutely STANK and was thick with some furry, nasty looking green stuff. No idea what it was or where it came from but the pipes were cleaned out. I can only assume that the same stuff is in the bath pipes.

Any idea what it could be and more importantly how to get rid of it?

It's fungus which feeds on all the nasty gunk that gets flushed down the sink - dirt, skins cells, hair etc. Best bet is to remove all the piping and clean out by hand, which I've had to do several times over the years - bleach and chemicals do sod all to kill this stuff and even if it is dead it just sits there and blocks the pipes.

Is it a commom problem in households up and down the country?

Is it safe to assume that the fungus goes all the way from the plughole to the drain? We cleaned out the drain too not so long ago, it was absolutely rank down there.

We have the same issue with our shower but not with the bath. Tis annoying, best bet is to remove, clean and replace.
