GTX280 to 4890???

Anyone who would consider going from a GTX280 to a 4890 has a seriously bad case of upgradeitis :D

Personally I'm desperate to upgrade my 4870 and have so far held off as I want the 5870.

Ignore them, same tired untrue rhetoric.

It's bloomin' true, I've had two 4890s and they both sounded like vacuum cleaners. It obviously depends on the other noise in your case, but still, they have cheap and poorly designed coolers.

surely thats brand specific, I got 2 (xfx i think) running in xfire and can only just hear them above case/hdd when they spin up under full load

OH MY GOD! DIFFERANT PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERANT OPINIONS ON A COMPLETELY SUBJECTIVE POINT!

STOP EVERYTHING!

Some people think they are loud, some don't and heat is a completely pointless argument for 99% of people.

Yes, changing to a 4890 is not realy worth it, you won't get any where near an increase in performance worth the money. I would wait for the new ATI cards.

p.s Reflux, what speed were the fans at? I say it a lot but the fan never needs to be above 30% unless your one of those hopeless obsessives whose temps MUST BE PERFECT!

Actually loud, or just "everyone's said they're loud so they must be loud" loud? :p

Like mega uber godzilla-like loud. Loudest of all the cards that have been in my PC in the past three years....that list includes the X1950, 8800GTS, HD3870, 9800GX2, HD4870X2, GTX280 and GTX260.

That's odd, I have a launch day 4870 - supposed to be "hot" and "loud" compared to the 4890 that you don't like, and yet it's whisper quiet. :)

I think what we're going to end up at here is that noise is purely subjective, but I do believe the 4890 is quieter than a lot make out. :)

I dunno, my 4870 does get a bit of a 'whoosh' on if it's a warm day and you turn AA, AF, mipmapping, and stuff all the way down/off and play a non-limited 3D accelerated game. With those options on (because that, presumably, prevents hotspots building up from some areas being loaded more than others) it's typically quite quiet.

Noise isn't subjective imo... it can be measured and quantified accurately, regardless of subjectivity. I have a 4870 in a quiet rig and it can definately be heard over everything else when running intensive games with AA/AF. It's not bad 90% of the time, but the 10% irritates me.

I think the performance of the GTX280 is fantastic, no good reason to swap it that I see, I'm hoping it'll be the next 8800GTX and go on forever!

My only issue with mine is that it's loud when gaming, even with speakers on, though I think this is common with a lot of new cards.

Well yes, you can measure sound. It's just that I don't see me or Reflux cracking out the ol' dB meter to bother to measure. ;)
