I haven't played GTA4 for a while, mainly due to the requirement factor (hate playing on medium settings).

I had 2 4850's in crossfire but the game said I only had 1024mb to play with.

Out of interest has anyone had any good results?

I've had excellent results at max settings with my oc'd 4890XT and Q6600.

Some Screens:

I previously played it through on medium settings with my 8800GT. Now I'm replaying it at max and it's like a whole new game!

y0. I have a similar system to you... I remember it running very badly... though I wasn't overclocked then. Maybe the 4890XT is the ticket...

What / how much ram?

Maybe I could have tweaked the video settings in GTA a bit better ...

my friend had an e6700 and an 8800gtx & ran at about 20fps on lowest settings.

Ive got a q9550 but i think my 8800gts will need to be upgraded b4 i can play it! I reckon it needs at least a gtx 260 or ati equivalent.

If you had two 1gb cards then you do have 1024mb to play with in all games. Each cards memory holds exactly the same data as the other to feed each GPU.

Or a Jasper XBOX 360.

£125 from most major high street supermarkets. Worked for me! :)

Nomadd

nope played it on 360 the other day and it was lagfest. 30ish fps with drops to 20's sucks.

EDit:

Anyways, gta iv works best with a quadcore, and a gtx260 or hd4870 or better.

Dual core = instafail usually.
8800's can run the game decently (35 min fps, 40-45 avg fps) but at lower res ( eg 1280x1024 tops).

e8400 @ 4ghz and 4890 @ stock = 59fps in benchmark

This quad-core stuff is more BS stuff said by kids who can't admit they wasted money on a quad for gaming.

Benchmark is rubbish and you know it... ( anyone can get 59 fps there)
there's a difference obviously between a 4ghz dual core and a 3ghz one.
Also, wasted money ? E8400 was more expensive than a Q6600 2nd hand for a while...
You say we wasted money on a quad, well I paid 125€ for my Q6700 and 25€ for my mainboard, and it performs just as well if not better than yours in GTA IV.
You wasted god knows how much on that expensive mainboard of yours.

Taking a dual to 4ghz costs more money than to take a quad to 3...

I lol'ed big-time.

Gta 4 benchmark is totally unrelated to actual in-game performance.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is BS sprouted by an old person who wasted money on a dual-core, because we all know quad-core is the future.

I'm using A Q9550 @ 3.4ghz and HD4890 @ stock. Using the same settings as asim18 I get very decent performance, averaging around 45fps and rarely going below 30fps.

Also, I may get shot for this, but I actually prefer the blur effect on (i.e. definition option off). Firstly it adds a little motion blur which helps with low fps but also just gives the game a more hazy 'film' like effect. It's hard to explain, but the the blurring adds to the atmosphere imho.

And it hides a bit of the jaggies, wish they could finally add AA into GTA .

Definitely blur on until they add AA though.

What's the clock on the quad?

Thanks for those screens, I've been wanting to see some real ingame screens on Max, I don't tend to trust gaming website shots lol.

Looks a damn sight better than consoles and all that texture filter sh!te. It's very tempting to play through it again on the PC lol.

I have had Q9650s, qx9650s, q6600, e8400, e5400, e6600, e2140....there's no diff between them. Anyone who says there is when clocked over 3+ghz is full of it. don't be queer. GPU is where it's at and even then games today are such crapola an 8800GTX is all you need.

btw for the record i paid 105 for my mb over 2 years ago before prices were ridiculous.
