Windows 7 hits RC stage Build 7100

6th August and I will install the RTM. I am loathe to do much for the next couple of weeks as I will have to do a fresh install on my PC and my HTPC.

Sorry to deviate a bit again, but DVD playback still isn't working for me on 7100, though it did on the BETA. I tried installing the AnyDVD trial and it plays back flawlessly, so there must be some sort of problem with the DRM/copy protection. Even VLC doesn't work without Any DVD. Am I the only one who's experiencing this?

So, just installed the 'RTM' for giggles.

First off, before I mess about how do I sort the fonts! ClearType seems to be forced on, even when I turn it off in display properties the bookmarks/toolbars etc. are all fuzzy but the text is nice and crisp. Turn ClearType ON and the bookmarks/toolbars etc. are nice and crisp and the text is nasty and blurry!

You can custom fine tune ClearType now, it's worth trying before you turn it off. It's also improved much over XP if you're coming from that.

ClearType looks so much better, atleast on a decent LCD.

Just got the latest RC of Windows 7 Beta. Does anyone know if it offers support for Crossfire ? Also has anyone had any issues with Punkbuster at all ?

STONE THE HERETIC!!!!!

Nate

Lol i was the same as you when ClearType was introduced in XP. But i much prefer it now in Vista and Win7, fonts look messy without it and reading is easier. But like i said you need a decent LCD with higher pixel density + DVI/HDMI connection or it looks too blurry.

I'm confused, which version is the final version?

7100.0.090421-1700_x64fre_client_en-us_Retail_Ultimate-GRC1CULXFRER_EN_DVD.iso

or

7600.16385.090713-1255_x64fre_client_en-us_Retail_Ultimate-GRMCULXFRER_EN_DVD.iso

?

I got them and I took out two files so I could install Pro version
but I dont think they will be the Final RTM and thats my last download of win7 THANK GOD :)

How do you do this?

I still keep hearing that 7600.16385.090713-1255 has been confirmed as RTM.

I installed W7 on my new build yesterday and it's pretty impressive coming from XP :) I've not had to put a single driver disk in and everything is working as it should :) really is plug and play now.
It feels really fast too but then again I've just upgraded my system and come from an XP install that was pretty clogged up.

Too late I'm back to Vista. I did manage to turn it all off but that wasnt why I left 7. Cleartype is the enemy.

Anyway, I won't be upgrading to 7, at least not at launch. It just feels like nothing more than a sidestep, and there were a couple of things which really annoyed me.

Cleartype being a pita to turn off.
Wheres the sidebar gone? I like my sidebar in vista to be always on top so I can see whats going on whilst on the net etc.
Dislike the new taskbar, what If I want to launch another instance of whatever program I have on there? Ok Shift-Click works (iirc?) but its just that smidge more effort that makes it worthless.
The grouping of icons in the taskbar is so slow, just slows down multitasking for me. With its fancy floaty animation between each window, needs to be faster and snappier.

So I turned off the taskbar grouping and put it back to small icons in an attempt to get it something like vista. Much better, except now the taskbar has transparency and any program running behind it makes the text invisible on the bar. Nice one. I ramped the opacity of everything but it still wasnt enough.

Libraries:
GREAT idea, I want this in Vista. However it feels so half arsed in its implementation. For example:

I had two libraries set up each containing three folders, which I wanted merged as if your looking at one massive partition. Fantastic, it works in full explorer view! However, try and have a library set up as a toolbar and it breaks it down by folder. Also, why can't I have a library on my start menu? I mean as part of the nice black bit with music etc.? I can have on there but not a custom one? What the hell why bother at all? Also, the same thing happens on the start menu and it splits it by folder.
Oh another thing! Great now everythings 'in one place' I can share that one place and my housemates will have less hassle trawling through 6 different folders trying to find what they need.
But no, it shares the folders individually.

I just don't see what W7 offers over Vista for me on my desktop. I have it on my netbook because its better than XP but lighter weight than Vista, on my desktop Vista is still lightening quick and I certainly didn't notice W7 being notably faster in my usage of it.

Let the flaming begin :(.

On top of all this, it has its own xvid etc. codecs built in. This was a huge PITA trying to override, even with ffdshow 'forced' and as high a merit as possible the system codecs would still jump in. I eventually got it working with MPC which is not my player of choice, on top of that ffdshow was a lot less reliable (probably avisynth in reality). Oh and for some reason my pixel format output was stuck on 0-255, probably an ATi problem but still something which works fine in Vista.

Installed the so called RTM on my main machine (Q6600, 8gb RAM) and to be frank it runs exactly the same as Vista in speed and responsiveness.

As an adopter of Vista from day 1, I see this OS as SP3 TBH, some fantastic themes though.
