Your All Time Top 5 PC Games

  • Thread starter Thread starter rjk
  • Start date Start date
Thief 1 + 2 (3 got 'consoled' so I didn't like it so much)
Max Payne 1 + 2
Mafia
Vampire the masquerade: Redemption (loved the sequel too but spent hours playing this online, making my own 'stories' for players to play through, this game introduced me to mods :P )
Medal of Honour : Allied Assault I just loved this game and imo the thrill I got from rushing up the beachhead at the opening lvl just hasn't been topped by any other war game.

There are lots more games I've loved but these are the ones that are important to me

[edit : damnit Nantucket! I forgot GTA: Vice city lol I got 100% in that and played the online mod for ages :P ]

1. Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
2. Doom 2
3. Jagged Alliance 2
4. Baldur's Gate
5. Psychonauts

There are many other brilliant ones I couldn't fit in: WoW, Deus Ex, Max Payne 1 & 2, System Shock 2, Grim Fandango, UT2004, CounterStrike: Source, BF2, Privateer 2: The Darkening (with FMV starring Christopher Walken, Clive Owen and Brian Blessed!)

1. Unreal Tounament (Only recently cut down my hours playing this game)
2. Unreal Tounament 2004
3. Guild Wars (6000+ Hours since release kinda gives you an idea lol)
4. Half Life 2
5. Quake 4

I probably would not say those are my top 5 come to think of it, but those are the games i have the most hours played :p

In no order.

Half Life

Got into this late and played it first on the PS2, loved every minute of it, it's just perfect, can't wait for Black Mesa: Source
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Max Payne

The first "adult" game I ever played, the single greatest story and protagonist of any "shooter" ever, the story and the way it is told through the game, the way it is narated is just outstanding.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CoD4

To date the only war game I have ever enjoyed.
-------------------------------------------------------------
GTA: Vice City

It was outrageous, it was brutal, it was mind bendingly funny and clever, it was everything the GTA series should always be, unfortunatly Rockstart didn't realise this.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
World of *oh alright I enjoyed it at the time* Warcraft

Stopped playing now, but it kept me going for a good few years and brought some great laughs, achievements and a few mates so it deserves a place.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just couldn't put HL2 in...it's good, but it's just not "Half Life" enough for me.

That would be the third mission not the opening level :p.
The first mission/opening level was in Africa at night where you started with a squad on a truck, a few survived and moved on, later on a square got ambushed, and only you survived to go on :p.
2nd one was in Norway at the U-boat docks.
3rd omaha beach
4th bocage & you being a ranger iirc with all the nebelwerfers
5th I can't remember Something about stealing plans for a king tiger and u got a medal if u blew one up, this mission also introduced the shotgun.
some missions between here that I forgot just like the 5th
Next was some sniper mission
again forgot a mission here I think
Then there was the King Tiger mission where you drove one :).
during that mission my game used to crash and I never moved on iirc.

Damn I really need to replay mohaa for old times sake, I still played MP reasonably recently but not sp.

1. Quake 2
I spent the best part of my younger life playing this game online, talking about 5 - 6 years. Too many games these days bore me after a while, but for some reason this game never bored me at all and I could quite happily sit there and play it for hours on end. I still remember using those Jolt 0845 dialups for clan games to shave 20 - 30 off your ping, and hating everyone on ISDN. Or having 64k ISDN and going dual mode for that extra edge.

2. Half-Life 2
There's only about 2 games that I make sure I play through at least once a year, and Half Life 2 is one of them... I've actually just recently finishing going through HL2 and the episodes again and even though it's 5 years old it's still amazing and I love every single piece of it. The story in this game I'd probably class as the best story in a game ever.

3. World of Warcraft
I don't play this now, and I actually hate it now, but when I did play it for about 4 years in total with a couple of breaks in between it is easy to see why this is one of the best games ever made - not just in terms of addictiveness which all MMO's are to a certain extent, but more so how well polished (after a while) and groundbreaking the game was. No MMO will come close to this game, and I believe only Blizzard themselves can topple it.

4. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War
I used to play this a lot, online / offline and so forth. Other than Half Life 2, this is the only other game that I make sure I play once a year. I've not gone through it again this year, and I'm looking forward to redoing all the Dawn of War series (except DoW2). I'd class this game as one of the best RTS games ever made, and made by the best RTS developer around at the moment.

5. EverQuest
Since Quake 2 ate my early teen years, this ate the other half of the teen years. I originally just got invited to play it with a mate as I'd never played an MMO before and at that time I couldn't have told you what MMO stood for. I played this game for 2.5 years before quiting, and it was brilliant 2.5 years at that. I met lots and lots of people in this game, people who I still talk too today and have played various other games with them. This game was ahead of it's time.

in no particular order

red alert 1
red alert 2
c&c generals
rtcw mp

so many other great games...giving away the final spot is harder than giving away my last rolo

1. TIE fighter/X-wing: I spent hours on these games and they are what i feel to be the perfect game esp TIE fighters improved gfx
2. Company of heroes: So intense and so much depth
3. Americas army: Not the greatest shooter but i loved the realism of this game
4. MTW: I loved the battles, the 2nd wasnt a patch on this
5: WoW: The original rewarded the hardcore players, i loved being an individual and still being in virtually every raid. I was able to play a different style to the other priests and still get praise for my style. Now its either 1 spec or no place in raid

1: UT
Wasted many many hours of my life on this game over 3+ years. Instagib online deathmatch (point & click) was my vice. Used to dabble with map-making too. Monsterhunt was a fun mod.

2: Dark Messiah
My cup of tea this game. Swords, magic, blood & guts and lots of action. So many ways to defeat your enemy. Shoot him through the head with an arrow, kick him into a set of spikes, slice him up with a sword, or just kick him off a high cliff. Possibilities are endless. Fingers crossed they do a sequel.

3: Severance: Blade of Darkness
Absolute classic hack 'n slash. Beat your enemy over the head with his mate's leg which you just chopped off!! Or be boring and use a sword.
Blood & guts aplenty in this little gem. Difficult control system & damn tough. Beautiful scenery too.

4: Silent Hunter IV
I suck at this game but it looks gorgeous and is very atmospheric. Nothing beats an hour or two of sneaking up on enemy merchants & sinking them. I love nothing better than to disable them with a torpedo or two and then sink them with my deck gun. Needs a few mods to really get the best out of this imo.

5: Unreal: The awakening
Got slated on release if I remember correctly but I loved it. Some levels were just incredible. Favourite bit for me was trying to defend the ship from pirates while the rest of the crew bickered amongst themselves.

Age of Empires II + Conquerors. <-- Sank so many hours into this when they first came out, was the only game I would ever play on the PC

Starcraft <-- Really enjoyed the story and the balance.

Bioshock <-- Wow, simply awesome game that had me stuck to the screen for days

Mass Effect <-- Could possibly be my favourite game of all time. Whilst the inventory system sucks, and so did the variety of planets and what you do on them, the story was gripping, the graphics were good and combat was pretty excellent.

FEAR <-- First game I purchased after upgrading my PC from a AMD Duron 1.1, Geforce 2 to Athlon 3800x2, x1900xt. I could not believe what I had been missing out on. To me back then, this was outstanding, both the looks and atmosphere.

Honourable mentions go to Assassins Creed because for me it is the best looking there is. Whilst it is not, you could say, realistic as Crysis, because it is set in a different era it is easier to make it look good. Jungle vegetation is hard to reproduce compared to sandstone walls. The viewing distances from the top of the Cathedral in Acre are breathtaking as well. Also Dark Messiah has one of the best combat systems in that the feel of the weapons was excellent, whereas in Oblivion you just waved your arm out in front of you in Dark Messiah the camera moves with you and you appreciate the different weights of the weapons. Drawing a arrow was similar with it actually looking as if the arrow was being drawn. Finally Half Life 2 should be mentioned as one of my least favourite games. I don't know if it was because I started playing it after I had finished Bioshock but to me it wasn't ground breaking or intuitive just boring. I really could not get into it.

No particular order and I'm sure I'll have forgotten some:

Asherons Call - my first and favourite MMO by a mile - literally a years worth of time I bet put into this over the years

System Shock 2 - very good game and one I wouldn't have second thoughts about reinstalling. Still very good now!

Legacy of Kain Series - I can't pick out just one title as they were all brilliant in there own way - but the story and atmosphere were second to none. Replayability wasn't that high but the touches were great. As the series split (Soul Reaver and Legacy of Kain being slightly different) the plot still continued in both worlds. Greate fun.

Freelancer - after Elite this is the best combat game I've played. Freespace 2 should also be mentioned but Freelancer runs and looks great even now. Definately one to play and the story line is great.

Dungeon Keeper - probably one of the more original titles out there. Nothing beats slapping your imps about to get them to work quicker. Some of the characters are great. A brilliant game that kept me entertained for hours.
