Hi All

If your sat nav can transmit its instructions to the car radio, will it be able to interrupt the radio programme you're listening to? i.e will the radio programme cut out so you can hear the instructions properly?

Thanks

My Dad's Tomtom can go through the car radio and I can't quite remember whether it mutes or just reduces the volume on the radio, but it certainly does one of the two to the level where you can easily hear the instructions.

Still wanting to know if in general sat navs can interrupt radio programmes if you're listening to their instructions through the car radio if anyone can help.

Thanks

what satnavs

tomtom / garmin stick on ones or the ones that come inbuilt into the car.

Most of the aftermarket ones like tomtom etc.. dont have this capability. Ive got the 2nd highest in the range ( Tom Tom Go 530) and that cant do it, so i suspect none of the tom toms can

Manufacturers inbuilt ones will though.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I was referring to aftermarket ones. I guess for these it's not normally going to be possible ... there's no easy way for the sat nav to communicate with the car stereo.

none of the ones i looked at had the ability to hook into the car speakers. They all used their own, including the ones with bluetooth handsfree and MP3 playback.

edit

the TomTom go 930 has the audio output using 3.5mm jack

does your headunit have a 3.5mm auxilary input ?

I have the TomTom Go 530, so I think that's a no.

I've seen there are also units that can go in a car radio slot, and these provide sat nav via a radio-type unit so I guess that would be the unit to go for to interrupt the radio.
