I'm looking to buy a 24" monitor in the next day or so and I'd pretty much decided on the Samsung T240 which is currently on offer.

However I'm confused (probably as a result of listening to contrasting views) as to which of the 24" resolutions is better. 1920*1200 or 1920*1080.

Does one native resolution offer a distinct advantage over the other or is it merely personal preference?

1920x1200 is 16:10 resolution, while 1920x1080 is 16:9 resolution. I have a 1920x1200 screen. Really, you're just getting more picture. if you're a fanatic about watching bluray films in HD without any letterbox, then 1920x1080 is going to fill the whole screen. 1920x1200 will have a letterbox, but it will look and be the exact size of the 1920x1080 screen. I hope that makes sense! I'd say it's personal preference.

I don't think I've ever watched any films on my PC and don't intend to really. It's purely for gaming so I guess in that case the more pixels on screen the better?

It's all down to personal preference imho. One's 16:10, the other 16:9. When playing many movies this will affect the black borders above and below the image, some people dont like these and will prefer the 16:9 format.
On the flipside, many users enjoy having more active space on their desktop, and will therefore prefer a 16:10 format to give a little extra height to their workspace.
For gaming on a PC, 16:10 offers that higher resolution and, again, a little more height to your image.

For gaming on a console, the trend is towards 1080p resolutions, so 16:9 is generally preferred, unless the 16:10 monitor supports 1:1 pixel mapping, this is for clarity of image. Of course, this feature is generally found on more expensive equipment.

So it all comes down to what you want to do with it and what your personal preference would be..

Hope this helps a bit :)

A lot of films arent 16:9 anyway... most are wider. so even with a 16:9 screen you will probably still get films where black boarders are present.

Just get the 16:10 for more desktop real estate.

I have the T240, great piece of kit. Using it with my PS3 and PC. PS3 on the games I've been playing has seen no bars as of yet , fills the whole screen! :D

Very impressed overall.

I had a Samsung 2232BW (Pebble) before and this seems so much better. Not just the increase in size but image quality as well.

Ye I like the different settings for lighting, from text - dynamic contrast. The movie setting is incredible :|. The intelligent colour settings are useful as well!
